What's the big problem with two or more provinces ?

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 10:12 pm

Hello everybody !

Here's a little question I want to ask.
When most people hear that others want a province as DLC they get crazy.

I know the difficulties:
  • It's hard
  • Very time consuming
  • Requires next gen systems ( Black Marsh for example )
  • Lots of money needed
For example , I want the next Elder Scrolls game to take place in two or more provinces , more freedom , more cultures , much more things.

And I want another province as a DLC for Skyrim.
I don't get the fact that people don't want this / don't like this.

I mean , it could be amazing to visit Daggerfall and take part of some political intrigues as the Dovahkiin..

You're talking a $30m budget DLC to do that right. DLC doesn't make $30m.

It would be amazing, but I think people are worried that with such big area Bethesda won't design it to be detailed.

Well you're right , but I meant the fact that the community tries to eliminate it.
For example , I saw a thread with a poll , where 90% of the people choose DLC in Skyrim instead of other places.
Of course I voted for Cyrodiil..

I think because it would be like buying a whole $60 game for another province, which would take years to develop instead of DLCs every 5-7 months or so. Also, I think the devs want to milk Tamriel as much as they can, saving each province for a new game until it becomes necessary to move someplace else like Akavir, which would give the devs a harder task to create lore and environments for a whole new continent.

As you said, it's very time consuming and expensive, so especially as DLC it's not worth it since you'd have to make the DLC very expensive to compensate for all the work it takes.

From a business standpoint there's no real incentive for them to spend double the money/time to make a game with 2 provinces rather than one, while still selling it at the same price as the previous games. It also means they run out of provinces to set the next game at sooner.

If they did make 2 provinces (or 1 province as DLC) then there would probably be a lot less attention to detail so you'd end up with a fairly empty world.

I'd rather have one very good province per game than 2 provinces with a lot of empty space and hastily done landscapes.

Most people here seem to be of the impression that a DLC might not do a province justice, which I largely agree with. Adding an entire province, which most are around the same size as Skyrim, would lead to poor quality or few details.

Visiting citystates in High Rock could be an option, seeing as each city state is about 1/4 of Skyrim in size.

If there were unlimited money we'd all like this. But since there isn't it comes down to priorities, and at this point I would put more (and better) storylines way above more geography.

High Rock seems possible because we've only seen it in 2d, but I think the devs would rather create something new than revisit Morrowind and Cyrodiil. Even though those provinces have changed much since TES IV, the basic layout would be very familiar and would eliminate the sense of discovery a new province might bring. Who knows, though. It would be interesting to see the new empire or post-eruption Morrowind.

Put it this way, it took Bethesda 6 months to get Dawnguard released - and that's 580mb in size. I think people are realistic about this one.
