Nvidia GTX 470 out of SLI over heating need input on new car

Post » Sun Jun 24, 2012 1:45 am

I have two GTX 470 twin frzozr gold edition cards stock settings, I have not ran a game in SLI in months especially not Skyrim. It would be over kill, and if I ran the cards at 8x in Skyrim in SLI I doubt I could play even 30min before over heating & crash.

I want to find a nvidia card that will run Skyrim at any setting without over heating & crashing. My performance is the same on max settings @ 1920x1200 via IPS. But I cannot have long Skyrim sessions over 2x AA.

I haven't kept updated with GPU's out there but want to stick with Nvidia, if anyone knows of a single card that runs cool and well of course let me know. My price range is $400 for a new card.

Have you blown the dust out of your case? Have you looked at adding fans to your case to improve airflow?

Your cards should not be overheating at stock clock-speeds when stressed unless their fans are broken or you have poor airflow inside or around your case.

Given your own problems and lack of knowledge regarding graphics cards, I'm not sure you're qualified to be handing out advice.

Nvidia GTX 560ti should be perfect, especially if you get one of the ASUS models.

Everythings clean, i blow out the dust on the gpu's regularly. Room temp averages 70 - 75f, case is a In Win dragon rider with stock side fan. The top card out of SLI will get up to 81 - 85c and Skyrim will shut itself off (higher then 2x AA). At 2x AA it isnt a problem, but regardless the card gets Way too hot.

My gpu fans will sit at %100 as well, and again stock settings, nothing overclocked. I don't know what else to do but sell my cards to get a single card. Sadly Id only being doing this because of over heating issues and as someone said above that something is wrong if your cards are over heating. Ah well I'll stick with 2x AA until I get it figured out

How close together are your cards? if they are to close together there is not enough "air gap" for the fan to efficiently pull air into the card and over the heatsinks. Some older mobo have the PCI-E slots very close together.

You shouldn't not run cards in SLI if your best reason is that they'd be overkill; if that's a legitimate problem to you (and it shouldn't be...), why even bother upgrading?

As others have said, cards are made to be run in SLI/Crossfire, and therefore shouldn't overheat at stock speeds. Make sure your case fans and PC components are thoroughly dusted. Additionally, you might be having a problem if your case is simply too small/doesn't have enough circulation. You can be a nicely sized case with a number of high-performance, efficient fans for FAR less money than it would cost to upgrade your GPU.

The 400 series' max temp is 105C. Are you sure it's your GPU causing the issue?
