"Re-speccing skills" idea

Post » Sun Jun 24, 2012 8:05 pm

Note: This is not a suggestion for Skyrim, nor do I think they should include this in Skyrim. This is simply an idea for later games.

While seeing all this talk about people wanting to reassign perks in Skyrim, I came up with a relatively good idea to satisfy these people in future games.

You get a perk point for a specific skill for every, let's say, 7 levels in that specific skill. So by the time you get a skill to 98, you have 14 perks to spend in that specific skill. Obviously this would change for skills with less than 14 perks. (i.e. smithing) You would still level up the same, but perk points would actually be assigned to skills. That way when you want to "re-spec", you can only change the perks for whatever skill you are redoing.

What do you think? Would it work? Or do you think this idea should never be implemented in an RPG?

Here's an idea: start a new character.

Works great for re-specing.

I agree. It's what I do. But like I said, I just came up with this idea to satisfy others in future games.

I think this was best posted in with all the other respec threads. This is getting as bad as the parthunux and blades / stormcloaks and imperials threads.

I thought about it, but those threads have just turned into arguments. So I decided to start a thread about implementing an idea, not saying why reassigning perks should be included or not.

Another respecing thread? This idea is pointless to discuss, because most people on these forums can't debate properly. You here the same so-called "valid" arguements over and over, and it just gets annoying. I'll sum it up for you.

The people who want it are going to talk about how they chose worthless perks, and now want to put them in something else. They will also say that Skyrim is a single player game, and what they do has no affect on other people. They will talk about freedom of choice, and talk about other games that have the feature (someone actually had the nerve to compare Skyrim to borderlands).

The people against it will talk about it taking away consequences, and how you should deal with your decisions. They will talk about it killing replay value, and how it has the potential to break the game. They will also say that if it's an option why not add machine guns, flying pigs, and other things of that nature which do not belong in Skyrim. The people wanting it will undoubtedly talk about it being optional, and you not having to use it if you don't want to. The people that don't want it will respond with what I stated above about the machine guns, or will say it's a feature that has no place in Skyrim. They will also say that there is already a respec option, and it's called new game.

I know you said that this isn't about Skyrim, but most likely this topic will lead to it being about Skyrim.

I appreciate your input, but try to stay on topic. I simply asked if people think this idea would work.

I see what you're saying. But reading your final question in your original post. I thought you were asking whether it should be included in a game or not.
I get your intention though. Some threads are just destined to be arguments though. We had a Timed Quests discussion and it stayed as a discussion. You get into something like this that people are so passionate about... and yikes!

I like your idea, as I've had that thought myself. It would just need tweaking, but other than that I think it would be a good idea.

Now that I think about it, there is a problem I see. You should at least allow someone to obtain every perk in a given tree. With the current system, even though I hate it completely, it still allows you to completely fill out a tree. Your idea seems like it wouldn't let you do that.

There are too many topics like this being made, let's try to search before posting and add to an existing thread, http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1383988-perk-reset-in-dawnguard/
