Why are traps so pointless?

Post » Wed Jun 27, 2012 2:32 am

Mostly a rhetorical question, I guess, since Beth probably won't change anything. But why are there even traps if they aren't going to do anything? I can literally run right through the middle of most dungeons without worrying about anything I run into.

Darts? Ha! Don't make me laugh.

Flamethrowers? I order my follower to stand on them for giggles. I can't even level my restoration with that, it doesn't hurt fast enough.

Falling Rocks?

Battering rams?

...etc?

The only traps that have ever killed me are the swinging spike doors, and sometimes the Dwarven fan blade rotary death-o-copters. Even then, at higher levels you can walk right through them. The big swingy door things are easy to spot, too, so I don't usually fall for that one any more.

So what gives? What could the logic have been in putting in pointless traps? It's especially hilarious when you consider the dead bodies that are often strewn about in the trap rooms, as if some poor souls before you actually got killed by these things.

Did we get lol'd?

I usually play as a weedy mage and traps can kill me easily. Luckily, they can also kill the draugr I lure into them :)

Traps serve two purposes:

1) In order to lure Mercer Frey into them.
2) To play havoc with your followers, and amuse us to no end. (Especially when they stagger back a few steps, and the AI plots their course right back over the pressure plate.

Their more ambience than anything else, not really that threatening but they do add to the dungeon experience.

Not every trap should outright kill you, their there to act as an obstacle and tool.

Swinging spike doors barely affect me.

Dwemer death-o-copters though... those are deadly.

There should be puzzle traps where you must solve a puzzle in a room in let's say two minutes(maybe more) or else [insert something deadly] will kill you. It would add dangerous traps and puzzles.

I totally agree- once again beths programmer used a flat number calculation and not a scaling formula (seriously? Who paid this guy?)

Mods can fix the traps and make them things to be feared, in the stock game- they are pathetic and can be totally ignored.

Yup, I usually pay no attention to them. Traps tickle me.

We did.

But I dont think traps are pointless. There is alot of variety to them and they are really handy against enemies. One of the few things I'm really impressed with this game are the traps.
