Probably a stupid question, but what happened to concole mod

Post » Wed Jun 27, 2012 4:03 pm

I remember when they were talking up skyrim before release, and one of the things they said they were "absolutely" going to do is create a way for PC mods to be used on the consoles.

Granted, a lot of them (higher res textures for example) wouldn't be possible, but did they just decide to completely drop the ball on this idea?

Skyrim sold mad numbers and made mad money, so I would have thought they would have gone through at least making some of the mods portable. I see a ton of them that would really be nice on our PS3. My days of gaming on my computer are in the past, I think. I just got sick of buying a new video card every two years just to keep up, and I really like sitting back on the couch and playing games on our huge flatscreeen.

Anyone heard anything about this since release at all?

Yeah, unfortunately there is a large difference between what Bethesda Softworks wants to do and what Microsoft and Sony will allow.

Upgrading your Graphics card every 2 years? I've been using the same one for 5 years now, and since Nvida got their butts into gear and released an updated driver for the card, I can play Skyrim on Ultra <3

Microsoft is not in to the idea of players being able to make free content

You mean it? Only because they demand 50.000 bucks for each patch released, and that buys DLC's exclusivity for 30 days doesn't mean they're that screwed up.

Oh, wait...

100% this. I haven't upgraded my PC in over 3 years and I only spent about $1000 on my whole set-up minus the monitor. The funny thing is, most people who own a console also own a pc. If you combine the amount of money you spent on your console(s) + pc you could probably get a descent rig that can run any modern game at a "medium" graphics level. "Medium" being better than what any console can put out right now. You still have upsides to consoles though, mainly being able to sit in your recliner with a controller. Of course, you can do that on pc as well if you have the setup but not all pc games support that unfortunately.

I'm just glad Skyrim supports a 360 controller - I can sit back in my chair away from my desk and it feels like i'm in my living room. :D

Yeah, microsoft and sony won't allow it.

The only way you'll ever get them is if they would make it paid. Not a chance.

I'm sure that they ever said they were "absolutely" going to do it.

Not me. I have piss poor eyesight, and I refuse to wear glasses nor contacts, and my TV is rather small, so Im forced to set up a chair litteraly a few feet away from the TV, and lean forward, in order to have any bloody clue what I'm doing. Now my spine is all messed up.

there was never a peep about them absolutely doing it, or planning to do it or Considering it....it was a side thought and nothing more and there are a multitude of reasons why this console gen will never see Mods for Skyrim including Microsoft.

Its was never about having "custom content" itself, because other games on both systems are specifically designed for that; Trails HD and Littlebig Planet being prime examples of games were custom content is allowed on both systems. Rather is about the costs and how much editing you can do. A console mod scene would only get a vastly cutdown SDK, limiting the amount of changes you could make. Why? Because MS and Sony dont want people altering the core game that much, and they dont want people "modding" their way to achievements and trophies.

If all three parties could agree to costs and implementation it would happen. It is just a matter of negotiation.

Also, because many mods would cause the consoles to go into meltdown.

Not to mention, some mods can be rather demanding on your computer's hardware, and the consoles are running with fairly dated hardware at this point in time. Would it really be fair for microsoft or sony to make then create a department who's sole purpose was to see whether or not a mod could actually be ran by their consoles. And what if a user has multiple mods with different leveled lists? On PC you could just use Wrye Bash, but the console's don't have anything like that. And if the solution to that was to release a Construction Kit that was very limited as to make up for these short comings, would Bethesda still release a CK tool just for PC?
