DLC - a new way to do them.

Post » Fri Jun 29, 2012 3:37 pm

I was playing dawnguard on my friends Xbox (sadly I need to wait for the pc version) and I really enjoyed it. It was a very high standard for a beth dlc. Better than any Fallout 3 dlc, slightly worse than SI. But still an awesome add-on. (I had a distaste for dlc in general after Dragon Age addon.... :shakehead: ). But still Bethesda stays with the old format. That is: "The NEW Adventure" one. What do I mean. Let me explain.

Every DLC from Bethesda contains a new storyline, with a new hero, the same is with the various guilds in the original game. When you join the dawnguard, nobody cares that you are the legendary dovahkiin, alduin's bane etc etc you could be some other dude that is not connected to the main story. And in most cases that is completely fine. I always use my imagination to modify the scenario in my head. That is the essence of roleplaying. I can have a character who is the harbringer of the companions as a decoy for running the show with the TG .
But here comes the thing with skyrim. When you want to roleplay as war hero....you will be proclaimed dragonborn. When you play dawnguard someone will call you that or something like that. And ofcourse If you want to master your thu'um you need to complete some of the guilds quests or even storylines. And we come to the main point:

In the next DLC Just extend the dragonborn's legend.

I do not mean that the next dlc will be avaible for dragonborn characters, but I would not mind "dragonborn heavy" dlc. For example: If you are not the dragonborn (yet!) Let NPC's be snobish about you. You are some dude poking around. But If you completed the MQ or some part of it, let it be heard. New storyline should incorporate that sort of radiant AI. You defeated Alduin-> Let new NPC acknowlegde that:
Variant 1:
NPC: And who are you?
Normal PC: That does not matter.
NPC: Riiight....

Variant 2:
NPC: And who are you
Dovahkiin PC: I am the dragonborn
NPC: You are....I am sorry that I did not recogise you....I thought you are taller.

Ofcourse it could be done for some other titles you aquire. You are the archmage? Great! Give us a dialogue variant where we can explain to some NPC the secrets of Arcane magic. You are the guild master of the TG? Give us an option to aquire some intel from local TG representatives. This would be great for us roleplayers, and great for everyone. The best part is It is not very hard to implement and some parts of what I am talking about are in the base game. I am not asking for dragon mounts, spells to destroy the sun, dry up the ocean. I am asking for something very small with a much bigger impact on how we play skyrim.

Thank you for reading this, and sorry for the long post. :thanks:

It would probably be easier just to fix the reputation in dialogue - not just for the MQ, but for factions as well, so that the members of your guild might actually recognise you, and not threaten to kick you out all the time (thanks, Dirge...).

I think the problem with what you're suggesting for DLC ideas is that Bethesda usually make them so you can embark on them at any time, but are often geared towards higher levels. So if someone ignores the MQ completely (as many do), they're still doable.

And that is great. But I do not think it is impossible to just add some dialogue flavors for people who actually done some heroic deeds before it.

a recognition system should have been in from the start, imo, while it will not be for everything, any new DLC should have this in

Also in dawnguard
Spoiler
Durnehviir will acknowledge that you are Dovahkiin or defeated Alduin while Serana stays in the back and is not moved by that. A big flying lizard talking to you like equal . No biggy It happens all the time
What was the point of this dialogue?

I don't quite understand what you want. We don't need a whole DLC based around the Dragonborn for us to get reputation (fame/infamy) back, I'd rather they just fix it and give us DLC based around things other than the main quest.

Three words: More Roleplay value.

Basically a recognition system.

And I am not talking about something like fame/infamy from Oblivion witch was kind of to the face "THE CHAMPION OF CYRODILL!!" not every low life or farmer should know, that you are the archmage. Let court wizards react to you as one of them, and let the dialogue reflect what you character acomplished.

One more thing from dawnguard
Spoiler
When you kill Durnheviir. Serana's mother is really suprised -> that's normal she doesn't know who you are. There would be a chance to implement this "Well I do this all the time. Dragonborn buisness"...and why my pc is not a little bit suspicious that he/she did not absorb his soul? And it is not even touched later

Aye, me too.

I can't remember OB too well, but Morrowind seemed to have it done well. There were even those responses built in for people to not believe you had done certain things, when you had (i.e. commiting deicide).

Something like Morrowind yes. But sadly, people are more interested in gameplay and how to kill new stuff with new stuff. And so this post will be sent to oblivion.
