How many of you have tried this as a part of RP?

So I just started a new character. I wanted to heavily RP him from cowardly nobody to Godlike Wizard. Of course it meant starting him off as a simple scholar. I decided to let him be a bit of a wuss for starters, during the escape from Helgen he hung back and let Ralof do the fighting then after Riverwood he had Sven accompany him to Whiterun in return for a little favor in helping his love life. He kept me safe all the way to the front gate where I thanked him and we parted ways.

Being a scholar and from his time with Sven he grew curious about the Bard's College and took a carriage to Solitude where he was given the suicidal task of finding a book in some ruins. Of course being useless in a fight, let alone tackling an old tomb knowing full well of the possible dangers within and lacking any ability to defend himself he picked up a mercenary at the local inn to protect him and guide him through the ruins.

I could go on but I'm sure you guys get the idea. So, has anyone tried this kind of RP? Of course soon my character is going to pick up a healing spell or two to help his mercenary in a tough bind, this and his love of alchemy will eventually lead him to the College of Winterhold and his eventual rise to power. Thoughts? Ideas? Advice? :)

I actually think that sounds really cool. I love that Skyrim is such an open ended game that you can make a character like that work.

People have been playing that RP since before there were cRPGs.

Then it must be a pretty great idea.

Just common. Nobody, weak coward to mage/wizard. That's one of the big three.

True. The big gameplay hook I'm using for this though is that I play it passively. My character is the brains of the operation, he picks the places to go and things to do, he plans out the preparations and is the one to deal with getting the supplies ready and getting the best prices for the loot they find. His follower is the real hero though.

The follower does the fighting, gets the glory has the honour. My character is actually relegated to being the packmule while his follower does the exciting stuff. It sounds boring on paper but it has turned out to be immensly fun. At this rate I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to making him an all-powerful wizard and might just stick to full time "advisor/scholar".

All great heroes and villains usually have a "wise man" with them who makes up for the fact that most of them are more brawn than brain. That is where my character comes in. He is the Mako to their Conan, the Winski to their Sarevok, etc.

YOU are cool man!
Btw I kind of hard to roleplaying. It always not last more than 50 hours, any idea?
Sorry off topic.

Heh, thanks.

To be honest 50 hours is actually very respectable amount of time for a single character. One thing I like to go by is to treat each RP and character's story like a good book. I give him a beginning, a middle and an end. Most of my characters end with death or retirement, one of them even ended in jail, he was a serial killer and I left it off at him in prison where he will remain for the rest of his days.

Most characters are great for RP as long as it is fresh. Trying to break past a certain amount of hours just makes it feel forced which eventually leads to stagnation. Best to play it out and when you feel it is drawing to a close, give it a proper ending and move on is the best advice I can give. Don't worry about how much time you spent on it. With RP it is most often about quality, not quantity.

Edit: Fixed a few stupid spelling mistakes. Posting from my phone so please forgive the frequent mistakes made :P

So is your character still level one since he doesn't really do anything. I guess maybe his speech skills have went up from buying and selling [censored].

Theres a very well done Blind RP playthrough on youtube by TheZemalf that seems a bit like this. Heres a link to the playlist. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=ELoeyDb4AC3vg

Ive only seen to the episode where he finally gets to the college, and its been pretty good, maybe a little slow at points (he makes a separate video for when hes reading a book, so you can just skip that episode though). Inspired me to start my own RP/DiD character, so i must recommend watching at least the first few videos.

seems like a fun RP. I always have such a hard time RPing anyone who doesn't get up in the thick of battle

I did that with my Vampire Altmer mage noble. I gave him close to two million gold, all the most expensive things, 100 in every form of magic including every single spell, I have the three top houses. Whenever I enter a room with a bard I pay him to play music. I married a Altmer female Taarie (who later "accidentally" died) I never go anyway with out a bodyguard who I deck out with the best weapon and armor I can find. It adds a entire new experience to the game.
