[Request] Improve equipment option for NPC smiths

Post » Wed Jul 04, 2012 6:19 am

For players who RP as someone that has no smithing skill, having something in place so we could pay a smith to improve our equipment for us would be awesome. It would be up to Bethesda, of course, but I did have a couple of ideas. Different smiths would have different levels of skill. Adrianna in Whiterun would be able to do "Superior" quality work. Eorlund Gray-Mane would be "Epic" at first, but would upgrade to "Legendary" if you became a full-fledged Companion. Balimund in Riften (I think that's his name) would be "Superior" at first, but after you did his quest, "Legendary" would be unlocked. What we could pay in gold would be the total increase in the weapon/armor's value x1.5. Oh, and NPC smiths wouldn't be able to improve enchanted/Daedric items. That should remain exclusive to the player, IMO.

- I know we can't pay a mage to enchant gear for us, but we can find/purchase enchanted stuff. Improved equipment is another matter. That's why I created this request topic.

I fully agree with this. Not only that but I would like to be able to go get my weapons enchanted as well. I play alit of characters that enchanting just doesn't fit them but having a npc to do it would be awesome.

Any mage that could enchant for you would be limited to just one, though. Double enchanting would stay player exclusive.

I agree with this. I think smithing and enchanting should be NPC services as well as player learnable. I mean, why shouldn't a warrior be able to ask a mage to enchant his blade? the way it is now if you want to be an efficient warrior you HAVE to learn smithing and enchanting.

:EDIT: and the enchanting and smithing should be based off the NPC's skills and knowledge, not your own!

You shouldn't have to learn enchantments to ask an NPC to enchant something, they should have a list of enchantments they know. and Smiths should be able to create and upgrade items based on their skill not the players...

Hell I would also like the ability to go around a town as a blacksmith and ask NPC if I can upgrade their weapons and armor and if needed enchantments for Money.
Like Guard would you like better armor and weapons?
Guard Yes this dull old blade can’t cut butter and my armor is falling apart.
Guard gives you his blade and armor you go and upgrade his armor to epic and his weapon to Epic and return to him.
Guard I have made improvements to your gear.
Guard wow that blade is sharp and my armor looks brand new.
Do to the guard equipment is at epic they pay you 800 gold do to the level.

If you did this for a long time you could have all the guards in a town walking around in Ebony armor and all the other NPC walking around in Glass armor. LOL

Or you could make a higher class of armor and weapons and sell it to them too.

See I would be more than fine with that. I play some characters that "learn" how to enchant but it fits them. But I just can't wrap my head around a blood thirsty bezerker warrior playing with shiny magic lights enchanting his axe.

Being able to take over or start a business as another way to RP. Could it be done? I would enjoy opening a smithing shop or something. Yea, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but done right it could be fun.

after thinking this through, it does technically destroy the smithing skill, but the smithing skills does technically destroy the game so, it evens out =p.

i totally want this

No, it doesn't. NPC smiths wouldn't be able to improve magical/Daedric items and they can only do the very minimum levels of a quality. The player's smithing ability would still be superior if you perked it out.

Certain smiths could make the Legendary quality, but they wouldn't have any way to take it to the level that the player can. The difference between basic Legendary and +100% smithing Legendary is significant.

ooh. well i never do smithing buffs to go past 100 smithing because it seems really unnecessarily strong.

Off-topic, but even with a boosted smithing legendary Daedric sword, some enemies still take a lot of hits to kill. Even on adept.

I would like to see this. It kinda doesn't feel right that my Khajiit thief/assassin is also a master blacksmith. Personally, I would like to see item degration back as well. It would degrade in reverse order of being upgraded, i.e. Legendary -> Epic -> Flawless, plus a few below base qualities. At any time you can go back to the workbench or grindstone, or blacksmith if this goes through, to re-upgrade it. Although, I feel that if you manage to let the item break, it's broken forever. A serious consequence to your actions.

I've thought about degrading equipment, too. IMO, they shouldn't break, but weapons should become dull and armor to get banged up. It's a nice compromise.
