Whats the point in Master Destruction Spells?

Post » Thu Jul 05, 2012 6:50 pm

You can do more DPS using expert level spells....so what was the point in Master spells that are worse than expert spells...? Because they look awesome? Not to mention the high magicka costs and time to cast them.

Not complainin' just seeing if anyone else was bothered by this.

Practically, they're not great- I agree. However, yes, they do look cool- in-fact, most master spells look cool due to how your character casts them.

The master destruction spell Blizzard is especially useless in practice though, whilst a lightning storm is actually alright.

How is blizzard more useless than lighting storm?

And I was actually wondering what was going on in Beth's mind when they decided to make master spells weaker than expert ones.

Of course I don't tend to remember that firestorm can hit a lot of enemies for a total of more damage...but not to just one single target..

Great visuals, poor implementation. They're pretty useless, by the time you're done casting them, enemies have killed you 10x over. The trick is to get enchanted gear that makes destruction cost 0 and spam the crap out of expert level destruction spells.

Because, from my experiences, it does virtually no damage- whereas lightning storm does a nice amount of damage per second, however, it's important to note that lightning storm works best, in my opinion, at Medium-Long range (it is too tricky to aim at short range- especially if your enemy moves around quickly).

Doesn't it do 200 damage over 5 seconds to a wide area?

Agreed, they're not much of a step up from Expert level spells, if at all. However, Fire Storm and Lightning Storm at least have some niche uses, while Blizzard is so useless I suspect it was coded incorrectly from its intended purpose. Lightning Storm has by far the longest range of any Shock-based spell and is probably more effective at dealing damage to a fast moving distant foe (eg a dragon...) than any other spell. Granted it takes an age to charge up and you are completely vulnerable during it, but that's another point - it does have a unique use. Similarly, Fire Storm can be used as an effective room clearer when a mage specialisiing in Fire is surrounded and doesn't have access to Chain Lightning. Again, rather situational.

Combining these two spells with Become Ethereal to render you invulnerable during wind-up means you're not as big a sitting duck, and they can be used to some effectiveness (if you can afford them). And as far as I know, Fire Storm is still affected by Dual Casting if you have the perk and press both buttons to charge it up - it will increase the cost and damage but not change the animation. I'm not 100% on this though and I'm not sure if Lightning Storm or Blizzard work the same way. Some verification would be great.

I love the Kamehameha err, master shock spell because it's cool, but beyond novelty and aesthetic, it's garbage. Master destruction spells are kinda like Glass, Daedric and Dragonbone, minus the practicality unfortunately. The time to charge is RIDICULOUS, the cost:damage ratio is horrible and you can't even use it with civvies around because they are guaranteed to die! The ONLY way to use it is to be far from civilization and to have 0% costing spells. It's a sad day for magic users.

A while ago I forced myself to use Fire Storm by allowing myself to only use Fire Storm to clear out a couple of draugr dungeons and a couple of bandit camps. I died a lot in the beginning, but after I got used to the timing of become ethereal, I found it to be quite effective and fun. I found that you can kill a whole bunch of low level enemies with just one blast, and high level enemies die after two or three blasts.

Fire Storm is very satisfying to use on adept. It deals 150 damage to enemies within 100 feet. 262 damage to enemies within 65 ft, 337 damage to enemies within 25 feet.
