In vanilla Skyrim I like Mjoll and Aela but personally I prefer making my own in the CK (although they lack the friendly banter of the voiced followers).

I don't know if she's one of the best followers in terms of strength and skill, but I'm somewhat partial to Jenassa.

Cicero - he mows everything down, carries my stuff, and provides free entertainment.

One of the Companions or Erandur, who I think has the most dialogue of any of them.

I would say Cicero. But since he picked up a staff from off of the ground and now he blocks when walking everywhere. Even when I don't have my weapon out, and he's always in angry face mode.

I'll go with Mercucio

He didn't corrupt it..

Spoiler
He was the only one who stayed loyal to Sithis, the Night Mother, and the Dark Brotherhood itself. Astrid was only in it for herself. Cicero and the Night Mother's arrival at the Sanctuary threatened Astrid's authority so she selfishly tried to kill both Cicero and the Listener - which nearly had the result of completely destroying the Dark Brotherhood.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?!

Spoiler
If anything, Cicero was saving them. Astrid was the little punk that betrays the Brotherhood by leading Imperials to the Sactuary getting everyone killed. Even Lucien thinks Cicero should not die.

Anyways, back on topic, I never use companions because they never follow you correctly and are always one mile behind you. But if I were to pick one it's probably Serana, even though I've barely spent time with her.

Marcurio for me. He never gets in my way, is incredibly powerful and has interesting, unique comments about every type of dungeon in Skyrim. I love Morrowind, and will sentimentally collect anything that references it, so when Marcurio talked about Yagrum Bagarn I decided to 'keep' him.

Same with me. Marcurio is a great fellow imperial buddy of mine.

I like journeying with Farkas simply because he is my shield brother and took more of an interest in me than the others. I like traveling with Housecarls as well just because it makes me feel important that I have bodyguards.

Mjolll because she is unkillable.

J'zargo because he actually levels with you up to 81.

I actually use Esbern, Delpni, Mjoll, a dark brotherhood initiate. Barbaros the dog, and 2 dead thralls.

I enjoy my dead thralls, but Derkeethus is definitely my favorite actual follower. And I love Bran and Cu'Sith.

It depends on the character. If I ever play as a Werewolf, Aela is my go to follower.

Cicero is my favorite follower for Assassins or some of my more.... eccentric characters.

The Dark Elf from the College is fun for my "good" mages. The Dark Elf follower from Azura's quest or Eola for my less just mages.

Serana is probably the most fleshed out follower, so she is good in that aspect.

And Faendal is always my follower in the opening parts of the game. Mostly due to the fact that I can quickly level Archery with him, but he is also cool because he got a lot of attention pre release.
