A question about Sovngarde...

Post » Fri Jul 06, 2012 8:31 pm

Probably not what you're expecting, either.

What I'm wondering is if the devs drew on some kind of real world history or cultural reference to come up with the name. Obviously, it was inspired by Valhalla from the old Norse tradition, I'm more interested in how they came up with the word itself. Was wondering if anyone had any insight on this?

It sounds kind of... Nordic to me. I dunno. I always thought it sounded appropriate.

They probably just took two northern European words and combined them.

"Sovn" means "sleep" in Danish and Norwegian.

"Gard" comes from the Old Norse language (as in Asgard). The modern equivalent ("g?rd" in modern Swedish, for instance) means "farm", but in old Norse the meaning rather is "keep" or even "castle".

Exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. Makes sense.

My dad thinks they got Sovengard from Lord of the Rings. Among a few other things that I don't remember right now...

So then it means the castle or keep where the noble dead go when they fall into the sleep of death.

That is great! I figured Bethesda got the name from somewhere. They do things like that. Thanks for the info, it makes sense. Sovngard sounds right and is derived from something, typically great for Bethesda.
