How do you use illusion spells?

Post » Wed Jul 11, 2012 7:00 pm

I haven't messed with illusion much other than the weak frenzy spell. It seemed rather useless because whenever I would use it on an npc they would just keep trying to attack me instead of even focusing on anyone else. I was wanting to try an illusion expert character but the only spells I see as useful without being op are the frenzy spells. So I was wondering how other people use illusion spells and what other schools and spells make this play style worth while.

It seems like a frenzied opponent will attack the closest thing to them. With this in mind cast our frenzy on the farthest enemy away from you so that they will have to come through the other enemies to get to you and then they will start attacking them. If you cast it on the first guy rushing towards you he is still going to attack you as opposed to turning around and backtracking to attack his friends.

When you shoot an ants antenna on FO to cause a frenzy you could see them pause examine their surroundings then attack the closest thing to them but in skyrim it seems like the enemy doesn't skip a beat and the ignore everything but you. I guess I was thinking it was going to be more like the ant. How far can you hit people with a frenzy spell?

I use Frenzy spells and then run away, then their partners attack them. Then I rinse and repeat, lol. Pretty darn amusing. I don't always attack the one farthest away from my spell. Sometimes I do the closet, but run away so fast his friends boot squat him swords. lol.

I'm not sure, but the higher level frenzy spell seems to have small AoE effect..like just couple or few meters but enough to get more than 1 enemy if your fighting a mob.

I just crouch in the shadows and cast on a random enemy in a group.
Having the quiet casting perk helps but is not necessary.

Never tried to use frenzy/fury in open combat. Have used calm spells on some npc's at some point though.

So here is a scenario I was wandering if it would work. If I use a calm spell on the closest guy then frenzy on a farther guy can I use a frenzy spell on the first guy when the other is close enough or do I have to wait for the calm spell to wear off?

Best use of frenzy is from sneak. I like to sneak up and cast frenzy from a distance and then turn invisible. Even more fun is to use throw voice to group up all the enemies in an area and then cast frenzy into the group. Madness ensues. It's very funny. I use that technique all the time in forts.

And yes you can frenzy a calmed foe. Any attack will break calm.

Sounds like some useful info. Thanks. Now where do you get throw voice?

Yeah, best to use frenzy type spells from the shadows so make sure you're well hidden. Muffle and light armour helps a lot at low levels. And if they come after you just cast fear or calm on them and frenzy an enemy beyond the others to set him off on his mates.

I only recently discovered how much fun illusion is, especially for a thief/mage character who doesn't like to get their hands dirty.
