From time to time, when Skyrim isn't simply CTD'ing, it terminates with the error message: Runtime error R6025 - Pure Virtual Function Call. Does anyone have an idea what's causing this? Is it sloppy coding on Beth's part?

In my experience those kinds of errors are due to the computer system and not the game. That is to say, something on the system is causing the error.
