I heard there was a way to receive both rewards at the end of the quest, so I decided to give it a try.. and after following all the steps from quest's UESP page, it didn't work.

I got to the part where Madanach thanks you and gives you the armour of the old gods as a reward, and then I killed him as he headed towards the exit.

Now according to UESP, once you're outside you're supposed to be greeted by Thonar Silver-Blood, who then rewards you with his Ring of Smithing. This did not happen for me. I was attacked by the group of Forsworn Prisoners who I helped escape and Thonar was killed in the process. I then looted his body but his ring was not in his inventory, which I was a bit annoyed at.

Does this still work? Can you still receive both items or have I done something wrong?
