Do autosaves contribute to lockups ?

Post » Mon Jul 16, 2012 2:18 am

So I've just recently started a new game, I have all autosaves active minus the one that occurs when you open the journal after a certain amount of time.

I'm only 16 hours into the game, and I leave Whiterun to travel to Valtheim Towers, and my game freezes as I approach a pack of wolves, the music is still playing but the game is completely unresponsive, I even press the guide button and the sound happens but the guide itself doesn't appear, forcing me to turn off my console and start from the last autosave.

My game also seems pretty unstable, a bit laggy at times as well. On my original playthrough these problems didn't start occuring until around the 137 hour mark and that was with a game I'd started with patch 1.1..

Should I turn all autosaves off ?

I've also been making sure to pick up any weapons enemies drop, I've even attempted to pick up the arrows they've fired although in some cases I simply can't get them all or a lot of them. What else can I do to stop these lockups ?

On the PS3 I have had far fewer lockups since I turned off Autosave.

Hmm. It's a difficult decision. On the one hand, turning autosaves off completely runs the risk of ending up having to revert to a save an hour before if I've forgotten to save, on the other hand it seems autosaves might contribute to save corruption or lockups at least..

I suppose I'll just have to make sure to save regularly.

For me, autosaves make the game pause for a few seconds sometimes, but never freezes it.

All you can do is have the disk installed, clear your hard drive cache (device options under memory), and clear your game cache (hold LB+LB+X as soon as you boot it up and screen goes black).

I'm a habitual F5'er anyway, so autosave isn't a function I need.

My game is installed to the HDD, I was told I didn't need to clear the cache by mods on here as well as others. In my original playthrough I cleared the cache every time before I started a new playing session.

Also something seems to be wrong with the quest journal, seems to freeze when I open it at first and when I press down the first time nothing happens, then it will allow me to scroll through my quests.

I always had trouble with auto-save in MW and OB. But I left them on in Fallout 3 and Skyrim and had no problems, or nothing I would attribute to them.

But you shouldn't load quicksaves after quitting the game or after it crashes, as quicksaves don't save all the information. Autosaves do.

Or atleast that's how it worked with the previous games

So should I clear my cache each time before I play the game then as well as turn off all autosaves, or would just clearing the cache do the trick ?

I tend to spend a lot of time looking through my inventory and the inventory of others, dead bodies, merchants, chests etc. as well as the stats screen and quest screen. Does this clog up the cache or something ?

Yes. Autosaves cause same game corruption but I doubt they cause freezes.

Any idea what causes the freezes then ? Would clearing the cache help to stop this ? It doesn't happen in any other of my games, and I hadn't even been playing for that long when the freeze happened, only 30 minutes. Also my playtime was only 16 hours.
