Clearing the cache and game stability

Post » Mon Jul 16, 2012 7:44 am

Should I clear my cache each time before I play the game then as well as turn off all autosaves, or would just clearing the cache do the trick ?

I tend to spend a lot of time looking through my inventory and the inventory of others, dead bodies, merchants, chests etc. as well as the stats screen and quest screen. Does this clog up the cache or something ?

The thing is I just started a new game recently, only 16 hours in and I've experienced my first lockup and the game seems slightly laggy and unstable. I've only visited Whiterun and Riverwood and several dungeons within Whiterun hold and my save file is only at 4MB.

I play on Xbox 360

I've been wondering the same thing. I clear mine when it seems to act up and I think it helps. Also, when I fist start the game my 360 revs up for a minute or two. I let it finish doing It's thing before I press start at the start up screen, and it seems to work better also. (Xbox 360 250g s).

It might but I haven't noticed anything similiar. Memory seems to have some impact on performance, so having stuff like web browser, steam window or other programs might cause a notisable slowdown.

In that case my expert recommendation (I have over 10 years of experience in gaming industry) is that you sell your xbox and all xbox games and buy a pc.

I have a PC, not sure if it's powerful enough to run the game, I imagine it is, it could run Empire: Total War pretty easily and without any performance issues.

Also weirdly my PC restarts every time I shut it down, forcing to me turn it off at the switch quickly before it turns itself back on again.

I was seriously considering buying an ultra powerful gaming PC just so I could play Skyrim without bugs (that is how it works right ?), I don't even want to use mods or anything, just want to play the game without lockups and lag.

Wish I knew.
My first game got too glitchy for fun play at about level 52 and almost 300 hours.
Been playing my second game to about level 40 and it's getting worse now with the glitches and slowdowns.

Hope Beth does something about it.

Mine does that too but only if I put it in sleep mode. Usually lowering memory usage helps my pc to "sleep".

Would playing Skyrim on an ultra powerful PC completely get rid of the lag and lockups then ? And allow me to play several hundered hours and still have a stable game ?

First of all lag is heavily subjective but having a pc that can run skyrim easily at 60fps yes it is doable even with a decent pc as long as you don't do anything like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHmWT6iPL-0

I'm not entirenly sure what you mean with "lockups" but assuming they are like game freezing. No you can't Bethesda are not gods among men and they kinda svck at coding (or they just don't bother). My game rarely freezes or crashes but it does happen.

Well I think they call them CTD's on PC. It's when the game just completely locks up, forcing me to turn my console off.

Became really, really frequent (guaranteed every time I started up the game within at least 1 hour of playing) in my original playthrough towards the 300 hour mark and even ended up making me delete my save, which I thoroughly regretted afterwards.

I cleared the cache and turned off the autosaves, game seems a lot more stable now, I'll try starting a new game in a day or two with them turned off from the start and clearing the cache before every play session.

I have a habit of constantly going through my inventory (a bit OCD), as well as my quest and stats etc. This I believe really clogs up the cache as it's used to store a lot of this sort of information (I think)...
