Main Quest and Civil War

I posted this topic under this forum as I assume that spoilers are inevitable in this topic. However, please try to keep the spoilers to a minimum if that is possible to do while getting your reasoning across. I have 208 hours of gameplay at this point in time, and I still haven’t been to Falkreath or Dawnstar, and I have only walked through Morthol. I have plans for my character and didn’t want to start the civil war yet, or continue the main quest. I am aware that I can do those first, then continue to do the side quests, but I plan for my character to be a lowlife and turn his life around into one of honor.

Anyway, for when I finally return the the main quest,
Spoiler
(I started “Diplomatic Immunity” but haven’t gone back to Solitude to attend the meeting),
I was hoping to make sure that the events occur with the main quest coincide with the civil war quest, which I have not started. (When I am done being a bad person I will straighten up and join the side I have already chosen.)

I might just wait until after the main quest to do the civil war so that one side has the advantage of the dragon born’s intimidation being a factor for why the side I chose will win. But if you feel there is a way to make the two quests mix well, please discuss that here. Thank you.

You can actually start the civil war and still get the truce negotiation. The dialogue is a bit different so I recommend trying it different ways. Personally I was glad, though, that I finished the main quest before the end of the civil war. There are a couple reasons which constitute major spoilers.

The not so serious reason:
Spoiler
Summoning a dragon to take a fort. Oh yeaaahhh.

The more serious story reason:
Spoiler
Continuing the civil war means there are more souls in the mist feeding Alduin's power. I felt better when the mist was relatively empty.

But, I also advise not waiting too late to do the civil war quests or else they will feel really easy. Your enemies already stand no chance but the imperial and Stormcloak soldiers are fairly low level.
