Is Skyrim worth $30?

Post » Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:55 pm

It's obviously going to be the next user choice sale item on Steam for 50% off, but I'm on the fence as to whether I should buy it. Frankly Skyrim as it was on release totally svcked, imo. The McDonalds of RPGs, not even an RPG as your character exerts no impact on the world around them, it's instead an Action-Adventure game (Steam should fix the titling in the game store page). The quests are short point to point with no depth or real meaning, and longtime Elder Scrolls fans attest that Skyrim lacks the replay or equally long-lasting value that previous ES games have due to it's simpler gameplay and overall superficialness.

And... the release game wasn't a challenge and there were too many ways to "exploit" the games balance - without really using an "exploit."

And also... Bethesda have become a hardcoe console-first developer, prolly due to that dumb Todd guy. Sure CK is great to have, it lets the community finish making the game that Bethesda half-arsed and tossed out on PC for the sole interest of quickly squeezing some more coin out of the project.

And then there's the sad fact that http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2227329 before the game even presents itself decently on a PC... yeesh. Bethesda are sure turning into a lazy and lackluster developer.

So, have the many patches so far turned it into something of significant value or notable quality? Or is it still the lowest-common-denomenator Action-Adventure game for the uncouth masses that it was on release? Thanks.

I'm a ps3 gamer that is totally pissed about the blackout of information about the future of the game on said system. Yes it is worth $30.. It's still worth 60 IMO. If they charged for gametime. It's probably worth 90.

If it's fun to you, sure why not.

Also, out of curiosity, what do you expect to get from this thread?

It's probably worth over 100 , compared to other single player games.

The game's worth 30 dollars if you enjoy it. I enjoy the game, and even if it isn't as good as the other TES games, it's still a good game. I hate that it is sloppy in many places when left as is on the PC, but it still is good. I do wish they did have more time to iron out certain things and make a few more play testings beforehand so the game had a better release state.

If value was based on time spent, a toothbrush would cost $50, a tshirt $500, shoes $5000, and Minesweeper $5 million. And sitting around bored would be priceless. Time spent doesn't equal value. On release, Skyrim wasn't worth my time, let alone my dollars.

But to answer the recurring point that if you enjoy it, then it is worth it... I really did not enjoy Skyrim on release, I thought it was one of the most disappointing squandered opportunities in gaming history. And I don't expect miracles from patches, or from Bethesda in general. Just wondering if the playability and enjoyabiliy has increased significantly due to the patches, or whether the patches have just added frills and subtleties to the underworking code that aren't necessarily playability enhancing.

Of course not, OP! Imagine all the spaghetti you could buy with that money!

No, really, Skyrim is worth more than that.

To me it's more than worth it.
But if you didnt like it at release you won't like it now. Vanilla Skyrim is still Vanilla Skyrim.

After reading this, I'm completely undecided on whether I should shoot you, or shoot myself.

I've gotten hundreds of hours of entertainment out of my $60 investment in Skyrim and I've only had it eight months. I'll still be playing this game several years from now. By the time I'm finished playing the game - if I'm ever finished - I will have gotten several thousand hours of entertainment from the game, just as I did with Morrowind and Oblivion.

Yes, I think Skyrim is worth $30.

Murder-suicide. All I said is true though. And lots of people have brought the "skyrim doesn't qualify as an RPG" criticism up by now. There was even a gaming newsite article on it.

Seems like you ready have your mind made up, TS. Leave it be, re-play Bauldur's Gate or something.

I'm going to agree... Skyrim is still how it was on 11/11/11. It has had updates, but they don't rewrite the entire game.

No. From what you have said and the fact that you thought the game svcked at launch it isn't even worth getting the game free. I feel the same way about the game and no amount a patches are going to fix the lack of depth.

Hell yeah it's worth the money. As soon as Dawnguard comes out for PC, I'm buying it even if it costs as much as Skyrim on 11.11.11... Which I hope it's cheaper just because it's an expansion, but still.

Dude you are on the Skyrim forums MONTHS after the release. Do you expect the people commenting here to be like "I HATE SKYRIM?"
If you didn't like skyrim at the start its probably not for you. Unless you are playing on PS3 then that is a completely other issue. The ps3 version was unplayable last I saw my roommate play.

I must disagree. Gaming "newsites" don't really count for much around here. Skyrim is and will be a RPG whether people want it or not. They just merged some skills, I'm surprised people haven't gotten over it by now.
The combat is still based on basic formulae, there is still character development, there are skills, there are dialogue branches, and those alone make it a RPG.

It's worth precisely the amount that you are willing to pay for it.
It's a good RPG, it's not the best in the TES series or even the best in any series, but it's a good one nevertheless.

The fact that you aren't forced to choose an actual role and that the combat is so unbalanced and the quests and dialogue so incredibly linear is what makes it less an RPG and more an action/adventure game with rpg elements.
