Inability To Purchase DLC Disc is Annoying

Post » Wed Jul 18, 2012 1:35 am

Yeah.. I heard the arguement against Skyrim players being able to purchase DLC content in the form of a Disc at a Brick and Mortar Game Shop.

Cue Sad Violin: Betheseda "If people trade Betheseda DLC Discs then we lose profitability because we get no monetary return from second hand sales". / End Sad Violin

But isn't there a better way...then say making players wait for years at a time until giving them the chance to buy a Collectors Edition Disc with all the additional DLC content.

Seriously.. couldn't there be a way to order Betheseda DLC where the only way to unlock the actual DLC Disc is by entering your individual personal details.

Some one has to find a way... because despite the approach taken by Betheseda being effective for their own purposes... I am now finding it all a bit lacking and pathetic.

And no, I tried playing Console with the internet hooked up to it, and I found the unexpected undelayable updates to be extremely annoying and taking way too long...thus ruining my gaming experience and dampening my overall happiness.

Also, I live in Australia..and the internet service down here is terrible...so I don't feel like seeing the typical fan/troll response trying to paint me in a negative light because I am not into the whole Online Nonsense and thus don't buy DLC that way.

Australian internet service is not terrible. Maybe you just have a crappy ISP?

Well they could just do something like how Blizzard altered Battle.net and have all your games registered to an account.

Right now, if I were to resell say, Diablo 3 on the used software market, I wouldn't be able to do crap with it online because the CD key is registered to my battle.net account. No one else could play on b.net with it.

Or associate a DLC key with a skyrim box key. That could get complicated though. You install Skyrim, put the CD key in there. You then install Dawnguard, put that CD key in. Then if you want to reinstall Dawnguard or someone else tries to use the disc to install the DLC the key in the disc itself doesn't match up with a particular skyrim key and it won't work. Or whatever.

Though honestly I think it's more of a cost to ship and manufacture thing than anything. People are going to pirate the software. You don't resell DLC discs. If someone was going to buy it to resell later they would have just pirated it.

I don't advocate piracy, but I'm just flat out saying that there's no real worry about the resale market for something like DLC when the inevitable happens. I mean, hell, I know someone that located a torrent of Skyrim itself before I finished getting my copy installed the night it released... -_- It'll happen :(

Wouldn't that make the game untradable?
Heard rumors of shops going sue microsoft and sony if they took that direction.

Diablo 3 is completely unplayable offline because many of the ingame resources, maps, and item generation are done though the Battle.net service. Its their way of forcing people to BUY their product and not sell it second hand. Its also an effective way to stop most pirating as well as force everyone to participate in the online auction house system.

I can understand how some people are disgruntled over their inability to get a dlc via disk but I feel like the cost of distribution won't be worth it when many people will simply buy the dlc online.

honestly this is probably not going to happen but Bethesda has done it before with oblivion and fallout 3 but with fallout 3 you had every 2 dlc's had a disk operation anchorage/Pitt broken steel/ point lookout

if I were you I would wait for the goty edition in the long run you will save alot of money theres supposed to be 5 dlc's right? well 4 are supposed to be like dawnguard so 4x20= $80 not to metion the one big dlc will probably be priced at $30 or $40 so $110 or $120 I don't know much about australian currency but in the U.S that's two brand new games not to mention you Australians get ripped off when it comes to games or you could just buy the goty edition which will be $60 if you have a ps3 you will save hd space due to blu-ray if you have an xbox you will probably get two disc's one normal skyrim one with the dlcs you could simply install skyrim dlc's and then sell the game. if your on pc I would just wait for a sale on a website to buy it online.
