Is it worth building a PC just for gaming (e.g. Skyrim mods)

Do your homework. I spent some time looking at "how to" videos, and user reviews. I think some people complain because they messed up during the build or had a bad part.
You don't need the latest hardware, although some of the new graphics mods for Skyrim would benefit with a video card with more than 1 gig.
I built mine in Feb of 2011.

Yes, it really comes down to wants against needs. On the other hand, I'm majoring in comp sci and engineering, so maybe a new rig would be beneficial there. Though simple programming and what-not can be handled by my notebook. Edit: Because wants and desires are essentially the same thing :/

I would think that building your own pc would be a benifit in the comp sci field, I'm not sure that would be concidered experience, but it IS something that would be valuable. Depend's on the exact job I guess.

I'm looking at a new Laptop ( not just for gameing but I want one that will also ) They are not cheap, but I need a laptop for my work... dang hard to lug around a desktop.

Look at how much you are going to play now, is it worth it now OR is it something that could wait til you get out of college and get a job? Then again it depends on how long you have left in college. I'm going to take a guess and say at least another year? if not and your just finishing off with summer courses then no, I would wait.

The benifit's of a desk top gameing are great, I like my 360 & ps3, I wish my laptop would play games, but truth is I would have to delete way to much to even play Morrowind. ( including my work program)

I can't give advice on building a pc, cause I know nothing. BUT when it comes down to it and you either by "X" part now and can play now OR get the better version next week or the week after....wait. JMO

Or you can go way under your budget for something that is decent. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227392

The 6670 isn't very good but a 6850 should only run you about 130 bucks or so. The 480w psu should be enough for a decent upgrade.

Here is a build I put together for just slightly over $1000. You can lower the price on that if you would like.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106289

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231416
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128543
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102986

This build would be more than enough to max games at 1600x900.

Now you can lower the price by $140 if you would like by skipping Windows 7 and downloading the Release Preview for Windows 8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/download/. (Some people like it, some people don't, I like it personally)

*Newegg is a bit slow today for some reason.

Are you sure all of These will wok together? Because I've been planning on buying a pc and this seems perfect. But will these work?

I am sorry to say that by going with Alienware you paid way more than you should have.

lucky for me it was a 3k system I paid 1.2k for cause Best Buy couldn't get rid of it.

Yes, you should definitely go PC. TES takes on a whole new life with mods.

For components, take a look at the tech report systems builder http://techreport.com/articles.x/23204. Tom's Hardware and other sites are great resources as well.

Considering that you're a little cash constrained, I've got a couple tips:
  • Focus on the GPU. Look for an NVIDIA GTX560ti or better.
  • Skip the SSD (add later). They're nice but they won't make a big difference in terms of gaming.
  • Some of the big mods, and mods that add NPCs and creatures in general (more spawns, etc.) hit your CPU. I'd seriously think about an i5 3570K (or better), though this is secondary to the GPU.
  • If you use high res textures, hq texture mods, spend a little extra money to get 2GB of VRAM for your GPU. Or more...
A couple of other notes:
  • If you build your own computer, you can choose quality parts, and you'll save a fair amount of money.
  • A "boutique" vendor like digital storm will use much better components than a company like Dell or HP.
