Should i even bother with light armor?

Post » Thu Oct 04, 2012 6:21 pm

I pretty much always play a wood elf archer who specializes in alchemy, sneak all that good stuff. I have reached a point where i am doing 150 damage with my Nightingale bow, plus i have poisons that damage health by 50-80 points, not to mention a few dozen invisibility potions. Is there any need to even invest in light armor or 1 handed perks now? im pretty much killing anything before they get close to me, so maybe i should invest in pickpocketing and speech a little instead? Smithing, Enchanting, Sneak, Alchemy are covered already so what is the best option here for me? Thankyou in advance.

Depends. Do you ever find yourself getting hit and having to spam health potions? If yes, invest in Light Armor perks. If not, I'd just train Light Armor skill via trainer and let it ride, without the perk investment.

With all three crafting skills you're pretty much invincible. If you're looking for a challenge I'd suggest starting a new character with only one crafting skill. I watched videos today where after maxing smithing, enchanting, and alchemy the guy was 1 hitting everything. No skill ups or perks in anything other than the crafting skills. Ridiculous stuff.

It mostly depends on what you want to focus on early-midgame since both types of armor can reach the
same DR late game.

Yes, you should.
Your bow is not as impressive as it could be if you smithed and enchanted your own with 100 in each skill and well chosen perks. Also, light armor (with 100 skill and the right perks, smithing and enchanting) is simply a vastly superior 'value' to heavy armor. Don't go with zero armor - you need some protection.

If you've gone with smithing, alchemy and enchanting then you've already overpowered yourself and broken the game and so probably don't need to go with light armour. Personally I always go with light or heavy armour depending on the character but never more than 1 of the crafting proffessions. I don't like being invincible by the time I reach level 20. It's not fun and it's not worth playing (this is personal opinion/preference so don't bust my [censored] about it).

If I play a thief/archer/sneak type character I'll specialise in bow and sword, block (but never use a shield, just block with 1h weapon as it's unrealistic for this type of character to use a shield as well as a bow and 1h weapon (again, personal preference)) and light armour. Also speech. I never max out the whole perk tree because, again, I feel too overpowered. Do all this and by the time you get to level 20 and above you'll still die if you make stupid mistakes. Couple it with some serious resistance to looting everything you see and it really feels like you're a part of the world and not an unbeatable god because, honestly, if you're said unbeatable god then have you not already beaten the game?

I will take into account all what you have said when i make my 7000th wood elf archer character. I'm still gonna use alchemy though.

I'm probably on my 7000th character now. I've restarted everytime I got to level 15-20 since I first got the game on release day. My advice is the culmination of all that restarting. Of course, everybody plays games differently. What works for me will seem absolutely stupid to other people.

My god, seems we both have a severe case of restartitis then. This is the first character i have made that has made it past level 20, currently level 39 on my wood elf archer. And i still get that huge urge to start over, its been tough to stick with this one guy as long as i have, but i'm proud i have. It's quite an achievement for me.

Sneak outshines all armor. That being said, archery outshines all combat skills. None of my sneak build have armor invested; it's just a waste of perk unless you're one of those people who are too lazy to play stealth properly.

I suggest investing in Illusion to enhance your ability (and fun factor) even more. And upping the difficulty to Master. It's around the same as Expert, and considering you've been steam rolling through things lately, you would do fine on Master (plus maybe a little more challenge)

I would invest in light armor, if only to better deal with other high-level archers.

I can't see how you can't go without some armor unless you get both mage armor AND quiet casting perks. There are numerous situations where there are just too many Deathlord ebony archers to take them all out without some of them firing back. And they hit HARD!

OTOH, I wouldn't invest much in perks. I take the first power perk and the custom fit. I do this for when I am still at a low level and my crafting skills have not gotten me far enough to provide much of a bonus to smithing. This gives a +20% and a +25% bonus. Later on, I like to get the perk that regenerates stamina faster. Faster stamina regeneration is a good benefit for an archer since eagle eye soaks up so much of it and you want to recover quickly for your next shot.
