Why is leveling up enchanting so fast?

Post » Sat Nov 03, 2012 9:48 am

I made a new character yesterday and decided to properly level up enchanting for the first time.I just disenchant every item I happen to find and sometimes enchant random items that I have laying in my inventory, and my enchanting is at level 40+ already, and I've played just a few hours on this character. Seriously, why is enchanting an item with a petty soul still worth an entire level? Compared to leveling up smithing this is AT LEAST ten times faster. Why? :S

Reality is, you don't really enchant/unenchant that many things in the game if you are just playing it. So, it stands to reason that one would get more out making or unenchanting something. Especially as you can only unenchant a spell once.

Any skill you grind is going to level up fast. I have enchanted every set of armor that I have made as I leveled up Smithing, I only use Enchanted Weapons and recharge them all the time, and I have unenchanted everything I can in the game. My Enchanting on my Level 53 character is still in the 70's. So, you must be really grinding on it.

No, I really am not. Is my enchanting bugged or something? Is it normal to get an entire level for just enchantig a pair of boots with shock resistance using a petty soul gem?

Depends on how far along you were for the next skill up when you made them. Plus, in the earlier levels I would go up one level for making one item, but now I don't.

If your consistently gaining levels for making one item, then it could be a mod issue that is causing this. Because, the stock game, Enchanting levels rather slowly in normal use.

I don't have any mods installed atm. I just enchanted two pairs of boots using petty soul gems, and my enchanting went up by two levels.

It seems to level up really, REALLY fast for me too. No mods. As the OP is experiencing, sometimes I can disenchant something and my skill would jump up 2 levels.

And this is with the Warrior birthsign.

I get fast skill ups in enchanting as well, but usually because I do a ton at one time, typically after smithing a bunch of Dwarven bows or something.

Maybe the skill up is based on the value of the item you create, like alchemy?

It's fast in the beginning, but it slows down a bit as you go up high, as with most skills. Enchanting is one of the easiest skills to level up. You just need to enchant 300 items to get to 100. A lot less if you have mage stone and have sleep bonus.

It has always been this way.

There are other skils that level up very fast: Illusion with muffle and invisiblity spells. Conjuration with soul trap. Sneak with backstab. etc.

It's not easy finding 300 soul gems...
