Anyone found one of the Dawnguard Novices yet?

Post » Wed Nov 21, 2012 12:27 am

I just found my first one cowering in the alcove beneath the bridge near Whiterun's Western tower. Took forever to dispatch him because he kept running...fast!!

Yeah - i found one in the Inn in Rorikstead. Serana went pretty crazy when she saw him.

I saw Hakar fighting vampires in the remains of a house near the Western Watchtower in Whiterun.

No sign of Lynoit or Saliah.

Was this one Hakar?

And I'm assuming you're seeking to dispatch him because you're a vampire. He spawned near there for me, but my objective was to help him fight off the vampires that were attacking him. I'm also wondering if these encounters have preferred spawn locations.

Dawnguard novices?

Well, Hakar is the only one with that full title in his name. They're like, Dawnguard members out in the wild. I think other than constituting new random (?) encounters, all they have to offer are unique notes on them.

Oh, I saw a Dawnguard Redguard on horse once, somewhere across the border with the Pale and Whiterun, didn't follow her though because I was taking Serana to her home.

Yes, it was Hakar and yes, I am a vampire so he's laying dead in a field somewhere.

Hakar had a key along with his note...

I ran into Hakar at Rorikstead tavern...wandered up to see what he was about and all he did was yell "help me!"...continually. The game just assumes that if you are a vampire you are a threat to them, no matter that Serana goes and lives with them if you go down the DG path in the questline.

So do these guys ever return to the Fort? Or have any quests or any way to interact with them? I've never seen any of them and I've played through DG multiple times.

Oh, yeah, forgot about that - the Dawnguard cache key - I guess they all have one? I'm assuming it opens a container somewhere, location revealed in the notes that they carry...

Not AFAIK. Lynoit is dead and Hakar wants to quit (the DG), so they're definitely not returning to the fort. Saliah, I don't know about.

They each have a cache key and a note with vague directions on how to find the strongboxes. It's leveled loot, not much really, but something to tick off the completed list. Saliah attacked me out of the blue outside of Morthal.

Based on what I'm reading here, I'm assuming that they spawn (randomly) somewhat near one of their 3 possible cache locations. Hakar has a possible cache location near Whiterun's Western Watchtower (both Soriana and I encountered him there) and Saliah has a possible cache location near the mill in Morthal (Soriana encountered her there).

FWIW, these are the cache locations from the Novice's notes, taken from the Creation Kit (BTW, apparently there are no caches there without the respective novice spawning first):

Hakar
  • pasture behind the inn in Rorikstead
  • S of Western Watchtower in Whiterun
  • near Stendarr's shrine in the center of the tundra (no idea where this is)
Saliah
  • isle east of Morthal Mill
  • foot of pier outside Nightgate Inn
  • under the great arch at Winterhold
Lynoit
  • isle S of Solitude Sawmill
  • E of entrance to Volskygge
  • E side of Karthwasten bridge

I came across Hakar faring badly against two vampires at night near the meadery at Whiterun. He dropped his gear after I saved him, and ran off. I checked the three locations, but only found one small strongbox in the pasture behind the inn in Rorikstead. With a chest that small, I might have missed the others, if indeed there are three. I don't know what became of him; he wasn't in the inn. I went cross country, checking the cache locations, so he might have been killed by something along the road out of my sight. Or he might still be running away.

Hakar and Salialh turned up at the same time. I got Saliah's note, but Serena had already animated Hakar's corpse and I wasn't watching when he turned into ash....

Haven't seen Lynoit, which doesn't mean that she isn't dead and I just missed her body.

Now, does anyone know what is meant by "Under the Great Arch" in Winterhold? Is that under the arch leading to the College, or way down under the bridge area near the water?

And similarly, does anyone know where the Stendarr shrine in the tundra is?

There are definitely 3 for each although I haven't been able to locate the one 'under the great arch in Winterhold.' I have looked every where up top and down below, near and in the water, and still can't find it. Will keep searching though and update when I find it.

It is south of Swindler's Den, which is West of Whiterun, about half way to Rorikstead? (I think that is the little outlying town there...)

Got it. It is NOT the arch between the college and the town. Directly behind the Shrine of Azura - i.e., north of it, and slightly east - is a passage with an arch. The cache is at the base of this arch amid some snowy grasses. So, if I'm standing at the cache, I'm looking up at the back of Azura's statue.

I've encountered Sarliah riding a horse a few times and another Dawnguard guy, but I have always used Pacify on them, and never killed them. I wonder if I could pick pocket the note and the key?

I pickpocketed her.
Having followed her for a bit, at one point her horse got killed and she continued on foot. Was able to sneak up on her and lift both items.

Sweet. :) If only there was a way to reason with some of these zealots instead of either sneaking, killing or confounding them. :P
