Just a Theory

I think the freezing and glitching may only be happening when you play for extended periods of time. Now, maybe this isn't always true but I know that I never had any major bugs/crashes with Fallout 3 although my roommate did with the same disc on the same PS3. The only difference? I rarely play for more than an hour or two in one sitting... He'd play 8 or 9 hours a night..

I've also not had any problems with New Vegas thus far. As much as I'd like to sit down and play all day, because of class, I can't. Maybe this is the major cause?

I understand that some of you have had glitches since you turned it on so don't make yourself look like a jerk and start yelling about how this isn't true. All I can say is, I'm definitely seeing a pattern here. I know that this isn't really a fix for the problem because some people like (and can) play for many hours at a time, but I haven't had problems with either game and I think it's due to only playing (and having my PS3 on) for an hour or so at a time. I'm also not in any way making excuses for the game... It should have minimal (or zero) bugs regardless how long you play.. Oh well, just pointing it out, maybe you already knew this but some probably didn't.

Rlg, to an extent you're absolutly correct. While playing for extend periods isn't the sole factor, it is a definite factor in the game creating bugs and/or glitches on the PS3.

The game is huge and has alot to keep track of. The PS3 is incapible of holding all the information needed in it's cache for an extended period of time.

As such I recomend saving and shuting down the console one every four hours at least. Just a normal shut-down will suffice (turn it off via the XMB till you see the solid red-light). Leave it off for at least 60 seconds to ensure a full cache clearance.

Also, the PS3 seems to have a problem with fully clearing it's cache with loading a previous game after one was played on it's current actvation. This simply means don't keep loading a previous save to get the best reaction from a conversation, or if you die shut-down the console before reloading. Try to keep it at one loading per time you activate the PS3.

I also suspect PSN may have a hand in our problems as well. When playing, I highly suggest not signing into PSN, and you may also want to disactivate all internet connections during playing just to be sure.

Fo:NV almost constantly accesses your PS3's HDD. Any interuption may cause problems.

Ah, I hadn't thought about that. I suppose that's probably completely correct seeing as how I never constantly reload due to unintended actions. I play with what I get and never reload a save. So far New Vegas hasn't frozen at all for me and Fallout 3 froze maybe once through 3 play-throughs.

Is heat a factor in this issue at all? I've played PC games where too long causes too much heat around the components and then they don't function properly. I had problems with FO3 GOTY addition with all the freezes, but not the first FO3 game.

Heat normally shouldn't be an issue. While Fo:NV is a large game that asks alot from the PS3, and therefor creates more heat than your average game, the PS3 does do a very good job keeping itself cool as long as the vents are clear, the unit has minumal dust, and the unit is in a good location.
