Recommend me a JRPG

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:20 am

For some strange reason, I'm in the mood for a JRPG. Can anyone recommend me some? Here are the requirements:

1. It has to be on the PC
2. It has to have only turn-based combat (that's what I'm in the mood for)
3. If it's a port, it has to be a good one (For example, The Last Remnant demo on Steam doesn't use the mouse pointer so navigating menus is torture)
4. I'd prefer it to be somewhat inexpensive.
5. And of course, it has to be good.

Can anyone help me out?

JRPGs aren't very popular on PC at all, and I can't think of one that's turn-based with good keyboard/mouse support.

Final Fantasy VII and VIII are about all that come to mind, and they'd be best played with a controller.

Find yourself a PS2, then we'll talk.

Anachronox, Septerra Core and Legend of Heroes. I heard from a friend that they are all great. A non JRPG that caterers for you RPG needs (apart from the japenese part) Would be KOTOR :P

Anti, I don't know what has come over you that you want to play a JRPG. Final Fantasy XI is the only half decent JRPG I know of on PC. If its possible for JRPGs to be half decent.

I literally haven't played one since *checks Xbox.com* March 2009. Almost a year, it's not like I'm a fan of them or anything. I just need me some turn based combat for some reason.

Antibody, I know you said PC only, but is your 360 fixed yet?

Because if so, I can't recommend Eternal Sonata enough...awesome game...

You could try atlantica online. It is a free MMO with turn based combat. It's the best free mmo I ever played. You aren't "forced" to use their item mall until level 100, which can take months, or weeks if you play a lot.

It also has turn based PVP battles. Worth a try, and it is free. Graphics are good too.

Ok so here's what's been recommended so far (that's legal):

Anachronox
Septerra Core
The Legend of Heroes
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII

That list is mostly for me so I can look into them more later. I don't have time right now.

Well, my Xbox wont ever be fixed because honestly $99 to get it "fixed" by Microsoft isn't worth it. I've just got to get a new one eventually.

So yeah, PC only :sadvaultboy:

Thing is, I'm not really into RTS's. It is an RTS, right? I can't seem to find any gameplay on Youtube.

I'm not buying a PS2 just to play a JRPG :P

PC copies of VII and VIII will probably run you about as much as a cheap, used PS2 would. Even then I'm not sure they'd be worth it, especially since you don't seem to enjoy JRPGs.

Ys series

Heroes of Legends 6: Sora No Kiseki (First chapter, second and third)

Generation Xth: Code Hazard Code Breaker and Code Revealed

Falcom is one of the giants of JRPG, most of their games are good.

The Last Remnant is pretty much your only option. Unless you look for old used copies of Breath of Fire IV, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII or Grandia II on Ebay or something. I know at least one other JRPG was ported to PC but I fail to remember the title at the moment.

I've played The Last Remnant on my PC and it worked rather well and I enjoyed it quite a bit too! But then again, I got a PS2 controller connected to the PC by using an USB adapter thingy.

Oh, and Anachronox. It's a western game, but it plays like a JRPG. Very good game too, except it got a cliffhanger and we will never see a sequel.

Folks, posting about PS2 JRPGs or JRPGs for other consoles is pointless, this is about PC JRPGs.

And no emulator talk either :nono:

Was it Star Ocean 4? I think that got a PC release, but I never played it. (I avoid Star Ocean like the plague :yuck:)

Well we were suggesting him buying a PS2, which is why there were recommendations for PS1/2 games... Guess we might as well throw out the baby with the bathwater though I suppose.

PS2 would also be the best value for his money because FFVII on PC is $30 and FFVIII is over $80.... (on amazon.com)
