Is it possible to play without downloading the steam patch?

Hello,
i've installed Fallout New Vegas from the disc. The files use 4 Gbytes, now Steam is trying to download 2 more GigaBytes. (Im dowloading at 62Kb/s, so thats 8-9 hours)
1°)Is the game really istalled or is Steam downloading missing files ? Is this a Patch or merely the end of the installation ?
2°)If this is a Patch, is it possible to play without downloading this patch or at least to play while the patch is downloading ?

These patches are important for fixing numerous bugs in new vegas. you cannot download the patch and play the game at the same time, If you open the game it will pause the patch. Yes you can play new vegas without the patches if u play in offline mode however it's not advised as this game has a nasty habbit of corrupting saves.

Thanks for the reply,
So it is really a patch ? A 2GB patch ? What kind of game require a 2GB patch to work ?
Moreover, Fallout:NV is not avaible in offline mode unlesss it is fully patched.

Yes that with the 2,4 GB patch is really stupid. Normally they should us give money back for selling unfinished game .... I also was forced to download the [censored] 2.4 GB my brother must not do that but i dont know why .

And as Nin3 said "These patches are important for fixing numerous bugs in new vegas" cant be true. Its content what we have to download no fixes. ...

All in all when u download the 2.4 GB patch game will run well.

1) This game is packed in archives. They can't just change these archives so they make a new fixed archive and put that in the patch, as the archives contain large part of the game you get huge patches. BF BC2 has this to to a worse extend even.

2) Windows only let one process edit a file at a time, so that's either the patch or the game. Therefore you can't patch and play. Not to mention some bugs that get patches are savebreaking.

3) I've seen bigger patches, up to 3,5 GB, with required a 2GB previously installed. 70% of the first patch got replaced but you still needed it...
