Followers Equipment

:nerd: i know there's gonna be some cool followers, and i for one hope they give each follower a decent weapon this time. my comparison is to FO3 where charon, fawkes and jericho get great weapons, but clover gets a stupid shotgun, butch gets a 10 mm and cross gets a laser pistol, give me a break. if the mindset is you need to equip followers yourself with better weapons, then charon's default weapon should of been a chinese pistol and jericho should of had like a .32 cal pistol. oh yeah and fawkes should of had a hunting rifle, i had no problem keeping my followers stocked up with ammo, but its really unbalanced. cross should of had at least a laser rifle, butch should of had a hunting rifle or assault rifle and clover should of had something decent. i would of been nice to at least have an option to pay a certain amount of caps to equip butch or clover more permanently, its annoying to keep making trips to casdin to trade tech for .556 ammo. :(

I am hoping they will have what the Originals have. "Use this Weapon" Follower "Okay." Same should go for armour :fallout:

Ok it's not that simple. You give them weapons, armour and ammo. Tell them to use Best Weapon and Armour and if that character is good with those weapons they will use them. They run out of ammo for that weapon they go to the next best and so on. If they have no ammo they use melee, no melee they fight unarmed. Some Followers like Myron would just run away.

FO3 svcks because you can't tell them what amour ro wear and what guns to use. Unlimited ammo for them.

Some followers were not in a position to have good weapons.

Although it was dumb as hell for an BoS member to have just a Fallout 3 laser pistol, Clover and Butch made sense.

Edit: Phrasing.

it may of made sense from a story perspective, but i don't think it played out too well in a practical way, actually how does fawkes having unlimited ammo make sense ? and charon has unlimited ammo, clover is from paradise fallse, and most of those people there have chinese assault rifles. they aren't walking around with sawed off shotguns at paradise falls. so there may be some story you can make up to try to make it work but its just kinda ridiculous, charon has a super good weapon that nobody else in the game has, that doesn't make sense.

Even though it's not right to give people like Butch Miniguns and such, I think you have to balance the followers out.

Seriously, a lot of people aren't going to want to use Butch because he has quite low health (have to keep babysitting him), crappy ass weapons (have to keep providing him with ammo) and no armour. Unless you want him just for the sake of his funny dialogue, he's a complete waste of space -- they're better off fleshing out other followers or making other, more powerful ones.

I don't think there's going to be Karma requirements for followers this time around, but if they are, balance it out -- Good karma followers were crazy powerful compared to others.

Don't get me wrong, I expect all of this to be improved in NV because if you pick a companion that doesn't specialise in combat (Raul, BoS Scribe) I'm guessing you'll have other advantages with their perks and the like. But just don't give us a 500 HP (without the glitched BS) monster with a Gatling Laser...

All of them should start out with basic weaponry. Should be the players job to keep them equipped with weapons and ammo.

Their default weapon should get better after you complete their backstory quest.

I don't use companions, but for those that do it should be more balanced.
I just hope there are no quests/missions that force you to have companions,it would'nt be really bad,but i like to play without them.
I prefer my sniping/stealth characters...companions just gave away my position in fallout 3 & i don't like baby sitting either.
But i should imagine the companion wheel will sort most of that out, but still, like i said i prefer no companions.

Firstly, your grammar makes my brain hurt.

OT: Cross had a Super Sledge, pretty sure she was intended to mostly be a Melee user. Complaining that her Laser Pistol is crap is like complaining that Charon's Knife or Jericho's Nail Board is crap. ~Its not what shes supposed to be using, its just a sidearm.
The only slightly weaker companions were Butch and Clover, and Clover wasn't even bad. If you gave your companions a decent mix of weapons, they would loot ammo for them anyways, and its not like you couldn't equip them with any armour you wanted.

Sure, i would have preferred it if Companions leveled up and gained access to better basic weaponry, but i dont think that the companion system was implicitly flawed due to not all companions starting with a ridiculously powerful weapon.

That sounds good, I just wish you could say 'no, use THIS weapon/armour instead'.

Actually, that's wrong. Cross is not meant to be a Melee user. It's not even one of her Tagged skills -- they are Big Guns, Energy Weapons and Small Guns. Now I see why people get pissed off with her weapons. Also, she has the 3rd highest rank in the Citadel... she should have a Laser Rifle, or something.

Though, I guess it was to try and balance her out. She's got incredibly high health AND wears power armour.

Ah, you're right there. I always assumed because she seemed pretty damn effective with melee.
Though the fact that she does already have one seriously powerful weapon does remain.

Yes, you're correct.

If she had a Laser Rifle and THEN Super Sledge as her back up, she'd be too overpowered. Though I wouldn't take her anyway -- she might just be the most boring follower.

In any case, I hope ALL the NV followers start off with average equipment. Though, we know Boone has his own Scoped Hunting Rifle, and from what I saw of Raul's gun, it looks pretty bad ass.

not sure who you say's grammer is bad, who gives a hoot, this isn't english class, and like the other guy said, cross isn't a melee fighter she specializes in energy weapons, i fully equip my followers just fine, you really missed the entire point of the post and talked out your A## basically. it makes no sense star cross had a laser pistol, she's a later game follower like fawkes basically and she should of had a laser rifle, she ain't gonna kill a reaver, giant scorpion or deathclaw with a supersledge, it would of made way more sense giving her a laser rifle, and clover's shotgun is crap, i've seen it in action, i've played fallout 3 for 2 years, i know what weapons work good and what ones don't, that sawed off shotgun is a lousy weapon and if you think its good, i would laugh watching you use it for most situations in the game, like fighting enclave for one.

the followers weapons in FO3 was inconsistent, fawkes gets a gatling laser with unlimited ammo and butch gets a 10 mm. charon gets a unique powerfull weapon and clover gets a sawed off shotgun that could barely kill anything, then star paladin cross gets a laser pistol, not one follower had a default hunting rifle, laser rifle, sniper rifle, or regular assault rifle. so thats fine, if people say we need to equip our own followers, then fine, all the followers need to be on an equal level then, then they all should have to be equipped, or at least something decent, not a pistol, like i said before, then charon should of had a chinese pistol, and fawkes a hunting rifle.
