[REQ] Marcus companion and Jacobstown expanded.

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 1:48 pm

So, today I reached Jacobstown for the first time, and it's now my absolute favourite place in New Vegas. Loved it all, the building, the snowy mountains and the friendly Super Mutants.

Although two things made me a bit dissapointed. The by far most interesting character there was Marcus, he just looks badass. But now I'm stuck with this old smurf. I wanted Marcus to be my best buddy.
So my first request is a mod that adds a Super Mutant with Marcus's mesh as a companion. If you want to put some extra effort into it you could do some cutting in his dialogue to get some basic lines for commands, but really, just having a Super Mutant with Marcus's looks would be great,

After talking to Marcus I went towards the huge building (hotel is it?) only to find out that 1, I can't live there :( and 2, the interior is something like a third of the size of the exterior.
I know this is a much larger request, but I wanted to put it out there. Basically I'd be great if the rest of the house was opened up, and even greater if that included a nice suite for the player.

Sometimes I just want to get away from the stress of the city and take it easy in the mountains.

I haven't had much occasion to start modding for NV, but I'd be interested in giving a Marcus Companion mod a try when I get the chance. I'm not sure how substantial I could get it to be even with voice-splicing since he doesn't have that many lines of dialogue to begin with -- around 150ish total based on the extracted files. I'd also have to come up with a good hiring sequence, probably using speech checks and completion of the Nightkin cure quest to make it more plausible. He does mention Caesar's name at one point, so it might be possible to frame it with a "if we don't stop the Legion, they'll destroy everything including Jacobstown" hook. Or something to that effect. At any rate, I'll give it a shot when I get the time.

Don't forget that Marcus has a bunch of dialogue in Fallout 2 that you could extract. You might be able to get some other stuff the voice actor's done, too (he's Worf from Star Trek, JSYK), though that'd probably be harder.

It'd be great to have at least one companion who specializes in heavy support weapons like miniguns/GMGs.

Bethesda has asked that people not take stuff out of any other games (including fallout 2) and use them in mods. These boards have a habit of denying relz threads (and any talk in general) about doing this.

I'll try to put something together which puts Marcus' appearance in for Lily's. I don't want to make a full blown Marcus follower personally, but maybe someone will.

I found Fawkes in the guts of this game btw.

The Fawkes that is in this game is out of whack, but, if someone REALLY wanted to clean up the damaged appearance, it seems that it could be fine. The only animations I saw were the run and the idles and those looked nice.

I'll make a couple different Lily combos while I'm here, just to do it.

You can make what you like from scratch, but you'll be contravening about a gazillion EULAs etc if you try to directly import stuff from one game into another.

As for expanding Jacobstown, I can take a shot at that at some point. Yeah, I know I'm still working on Rivet City and Canterbury Commons for FO3, but ... it'll happen.

I would love to see a full-blown Marcus follower... so long as he can still walk around with a massive minigun and be all 'Michael Dorn' sounding.

Yeah... that'd be nice... I would gladly give up most of the other options for Marcus.

I also always liked Myron. It's a shame they killed him off.

That's pretty much what I was thinking when I posted that, except for some reason I then thought 'hey, if he rips the voice file apart and then stitches it back together it might not count as importing it from one game into another!' But then a bit after I posted I smacked my head and went 'well duh, that's still importing stuff from one copyrighted source into another and would be even if he just sampled Worf's voice from Star Trek':/

For those who were still interested, I have just released an early version of a full-fledged http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37376.

I managed to scraqe together about 50ish new lines out of the original 150, which were enough to cover both a full hiring sequence and all companion options. Besides that it's pretty bare-bones and he's nowhere near as chatty as the vanilla companions --- though I suppose that might be part of the appeal given how loud and obnoxious Fawkes and Lily are.

Strange nostalgic question...

Does Marcus still slaughter you and any other companions you happen to have if you let him have a minigun? (Fortunately, he was always a good shot with a plasma rifle, and handy with a power fist.)

To my knowledge, weapons like miniguns do not cause followers to have friendly fire to one another.

No mutant in fallout 3 can wear a power fist even when you try to design it in, and I expect the same thing applies to NV mutants (I did not check though!). I spent some time working with Fawkes on this in combination with TalkieToaster working on the necessary animations, and it would always glitch him up, probably related to unequipping.

In NV, I don't believe any mutant can equip a plasma rifle or similar. This can be modded in by doing up replacement animations (there is a modders resource for FO3 which does this).

Woh.

As I was working on Phalanx I discovered a power-fist like weapon which seems that it is meant for a certain super mutant to use (I don't want to put spoilers in here).

I'm unaware of if it's actually USED in the game and I don't know if it glitches up mutants who attempt to use it. I just found it in the GECK is all.

If they cleaned up the power fist problem mutants had/have that sure would be cool! But I don't want to get all excited and stuff, in case they ran into trouble and this thing is not actually usable by mutants.

if you want to see the item, go to the weapons and filter on the word gauntlet (this will also reveal which mutant it seems to be associated with).

Edit: I see no meaningful use info on the item .. I'm going to test it in game now

I put this power fist like weapon onto Lily and did some testing with her, watched her use of it, and also checked her with her regular non-ranged weapon (which is a melee weapon, a vertibird blade of sorts).

I cannot tell if the problem TalkieToaster and I were struggling with is still there, because her adherance to her melee-only vs ranged-only combat styles are so strict. So to really know the answer to this, I'd have to make her use it and do long term testing. (question being: does the weapon glitch the mutant too badly for use in-game).

The weapon doesn't physically display when she equips it, which doesn't surprise me. The power fist in Fallout 3 had terrible display characteristics when you put it onto a mutant. The sort of work necessary to make it have the correct looks when equipped and used by a mutant wasn't the type TalkieToaster nor I could manage. This power fist has a very obvious sound when it makes a hit, though.

Compared to how she works on her vertibird blade, I'm going to guess that this weap was not exactly finished for what it seems to have been meant to be. I say that because her fight isn't well tuned on it, and the weapon itself is lower DPS, and the fist does not have the special effects that her vertibird blade does.

Very nice that it was included though because - - if the only problem is that there's no visual equip signs - - that's a minor problem for those of us who prefer muties on power fists like the Fallout 2 ones (such as marcus) could be. If there are no killer glitches, the weap (and possibly the combat style) can be tuned up, and it would be acceptable for us FO2 Super Power Fist freaks.
