After logging in a few hours of playing New Vegas, the game starting freezing on me when I got to Freeside and starting doing the Garrett quests. Anyway, the game froze on me and I no choice but to hit the power switch in the back in order to get the PS3 back up and running. This actually happened twice within about 2 hours...but, after the second time the machine failed to boot back up and I get the TYLoD.

I've never had any issues with my PS3 in the 2 plus years I've owned it until New Vegas.

Now, I've had New Vegas since the day it came out, and I decided to be patient and shelve it until the bugs were 'fixed', and within 3 days of downloading the new patch and really getting into the game, it breaks.

Thanks Bethesda for releasing a product that I paid $65 for that would eventually break my PS3. I can either pay the $150 to get it fixed, or just get a new Slim. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.

Anyway, after this, I've decided to never buy/rent/borrow another one of your games again.

I'm guessing you have one of the older models, since there's the switch on the back. your not supposed to flick that to off when your game freezes. it's like pulling the power cord out of the wall. you just hold the power button and your system will shut off safely.


yes, it was their game that froze and required you to do that, but there's a safer way then what you did.

use the power button next time.

I used the power button to reset my system, not the switch. And my old system died.
PS3 is not designed to handle the multiple resets that NV requires.
I blame the developers. Had their game worked properly and not required resets, my old PS3 would still be kicking.

okay, I can see that as being a problem. games shouldn't freeze in the quantity that new vegas gives you, but if you can't get it going just try and sell it or shelve it for the next patch(that will mostly deal with upcoming DLC issues). I'm selling mine, and I've spent 140 upon release. I'm not too happy about the condition the game was released in either.

and NEVER use the switch on the back to turn off your system, unless after using the power button it just sits there blinking(I don't know if the old models do the same) for half an hour. when you shut off your system normally next time, look at the HDD indicator and you'll see it blinking immediately after pressing the power button. this doesn't happen when you just flip the power switch. it's an immediate shut-off.

YLoD is an overheating issue (thermal paste breaking down). Worst that could happen by shutting your PS3 off improperly is messing up your HDD, in which case it would boot but not load - not give you the yellow light.

I'd say it's just chance that NV happened to be in your PS3 when it YLoD. I know it's natural to look for something to blame but a particular game cannot cause YLoD. I frequent the official PS forums and there's a thread everyday in every game section that says that particular game broke their PS3. It's all coincidence.

I don't know about stupidity maybe by the game devs we shouldn't have to worry about all this or do special things to get the game to play better. I think we're all stupid for buying from these companies again I was fooled because Fo3 played fine for me but it seems NV will never get to that stability. I honestly will not buy from these companies again not because they keep making broken games but because how greedy they are its pathetic... And to be honest I would be happy to see these companies and others that pull this crap go bankrupt.

hrmmmm well i guess i'm gonna have shelv this game to see if they are gonna try and fix the freezing issue. I feel ripped off and its annoying to know a company can get away with fraudulently selling a broken product to the public without being held accountable. It's a shame because i really like this game but i refuse to sit back and blame the consumers for something that the dev created. I dont want my ps3 to break so i wont be playing this and if they dont patch it i will sell it and make it a point to tell everyone not to purchase this game.

explain to me how calling someone stupid helps anything? this is exactly the attitude from a lot of ppl here that i have a problem with..its so easy to call someone names and belittle their education when trying to defend this broken travesty of a game..

I wasn't saying he was stupid, just that Bethesda isn't responsible for you turning off your system improperly, whether or not it was their game that froze it. there's a safer way to do it. he was trying to say that there liable for damage, which they are most definetly not, or they would be bankrupt.

so i take it your an expert on the ps3 and all its workings?

do you have to be to know that instantly shutting off your console will mess it up?

do me a favour, walk over to your system, turn it on, then yank the cord out of the wall. that's the same thing...

if that makes me an expert Sony should give me a job

A bit late, maybe, but have you tried doing a system reset or booting into safe mode?

I find that when I get a total freeze, I just hit the eject button and take the disc out. Usually after a minute it goes to the XMB. That at least saves from restarting the system or hardkilling the ps3 with the power switch on back.
