Ten weeks in, still can't progress...

I signed up to this forum solely to post this topic; mainly to vent my frustration but with the vain hope of finding a solution.

From the top:

New Vegas is now unplayable for me. I've put around 20-25 hours into my first run-through, and spent a lot of time levelling (to 30) and performing side-quests while avoiding the main storyline as much as possible. The hard finish on F3 ruined the experience for me, and I wasn't prepared to make the same mistake again.

Having got to a suitable stage, I decided it was time to enter The Strip and finally hunt down Benny. However, on passing the Securitron guards outside the North Gate the following happens:

  • I get onto The Strip and see the NCR soldier throwing up to my right.
  • A Securitron is standing still to my left, at the end of the fence, and to my right, by the gate.
  • After a few seconds, another Securitron appears from behind the fence to my left. This robot is obviously Victor, but is not named as such - and only certain dialogue branches actually refer to him as Victor or make an implied connection.
  • Eventually, "pseudo-Victor" trundles off towards the Lucky 38 and invites me to follow him to meet Mr House.
  • As the dialogue ends, I notice a Securitron corpse on the steps leading up to the L38. This seems to appear during (i.e. be trigger by) the dialogue with pseudo-Victor.
  • Following the robot I just spoke to, I see he disappears at the door to the casino - presumably going inside.
  • The robot corpse that is sat on the steps is named as Victor's corpse - but no Victor character has been stood there in the first place, and certainly no-one has been killed. The corpse contains 1x Scrap Metal, 200 x 10mm rounds, and 20 x missiles.
  • On entering the L38, there are four Securitrons in the lobby. One of these is Victor (alive) and, crucially, ALL FOUR of them are HOSTILE.
  • If I skip past the inevitable combat and jump into the lift, I can proceed to either floor - Mr House's office or the hotel room I assume he should ultimately gift me.
  • If I enter the hotel room, it's buggy as hell as obviously it isn't my room at that point.
  • If I go to Mr House's office, his "secretary" robot is immediately hostile and attempts to kill me.

At this point I've given up, as everything is obviously up the creek. I stopped playing for over a month, waiting for the long-awaited patch for PS3. I finally got around to downloading that this afternoon (V1.02) only to find that it hasn't fixed a single thing. All of the above still happens, and the save file I have put over 20 hours into is, to all intents and purposes, useless.

First up, I'd like to offer my most sarcastic thank you to Bethesda and Obsidian for wasting my time and my money while simultaneously destroying this once-great franchise. Secondly, I'd like to offer a pre-emptive, genuine thank you to anyone who may be able to help me salvage the save file and continue in a manner approaching normal. On the off-chance someone tells me that all those robots are supposed to be hostile, irrespective of earlier actions or reputation, then I can honestly say that the whole episode is ridiculous. However, I'm pretty certain that the way it plays out for me (ten times in ten for me now, including two post-patch) is the result of a bug and not remotely intentional.

Regards,

Annoyed of Bristol.

I'm playing it on 360, but that seems very strange!
Victor should appear, and should not be hostile, neither should the robots inside the Lucky 38 (Mr House has invited you to meet him, after all).
Although this could depend on what you've done previously.
I don't suppose you're wearing a faction outfit that would p*ss him off?

Did you went into Vault 11 ?

Because there are some other threads that mention something similar, if you destroy the turrets in that vault the Lucky 38 turns hostile. I don't know why since I couldn't find any relationship between them. But I didn't run into anything like you describe.

Maybe if by any chance you happen to have a previuos save before going into the vault might help. Otherwise you should be able to finish the game allied with any of the other factions :

SPOILER

NCR doesn't requiere the chip. / You can kill Benny and take the chip to Caesar. / Follow Yes Man plan.

At this point you can no longer follow Mr. House's playthrough.

Good Luck.

I'd imagine that Victor is intentionally faction-neutral, else it'd interfere with the main storyline. That said, I'm simply wearing normal combat armour.

I get the impression that it's down to a side-quest I've done previously. As mentioned, I've done a lot (seemingly all!) of them. However, this shouldn't affect my ability to progress. If a quest impacts on the main storyline, it should be part of the storyline and not accessible until the right moment.

I do remember entering a Vault (11?) that tried to kill me when I went down into a chamber, watched a "thanks for being a martyr" video and then unleashing hell from the walls. During this time, I got a "Quest Failed: The House Always Wins" message. The bit of digging I've done, along with a minor application of common sense, indicates that this quest is tied to Mr House in some way. Maybe that's where it went wrong? The quest failure message actually gave the quest name as "The House Always Wins, I", which I found very strange - unless Mr House (or Vaultboy) was an Ali G fan...

Ommega - ha, I was writing that response at the same time as you. I figured it would be that.

I have one save just before going into the Vault 11 "death room", but it's about 15+ hours of gaming back and I refuse to start again just because Obsidian/Bethesda/whoever can't square away their logic branches. Safe to say I won't be buying the new DLC pack (which looks vaguely interesting) or any other Fallout software until the development studio changes - which is unfortunate because I've been playing Fallout since around '98. I think the guy in another post who plans of taking the developers to the Small Claims Court is on to a winner. £40 capital spend plus a minimum of 15 hours wasted is not something I can afford to throw away.

Howdy Bruxy . . .

There is no bug or game play problem that is affecting your situation . . . you have caused one "pathway" to the endgame and certain quests to be no longer achievable. As mentioned, this happened in Vault 11 and the game gave you the Message "Quest Failed, the House Always Wins I".

It is possible that your previous actions have made other pathways unachievable as well. Just look in your Pipboy under quests and find out which ones are still active. Since this is not a bug issue, I can't really go into detail as it would be a spoiler . . . suffice it to say . . . without creating too much of a spoiler . . .

There are four pathways to the endgame - three based on the "main" factions. No matter what actions you take and what quests you fail, you can always finish the game as an independent.

It does not seem like you have really tried anything else at the Strip . . . explore a little or use your Pipboy to get you to the next quest!

. . . And please . . . do yourself a favor and save the game a little more often! ANY roleplay game should be saved every half hour or so with DIFFERENT save files . . . sure, you can overwrite some eventually . . . but help yourself out. Hit the save game button occasionally. 15 hours with no other save is insane (sorry, but it is!). When you are adventuring and get a message out of nowhere that you have Failed a Quest that you didn't plan on failing, you should immediately open your Pipboy and look at the Quests. A few seconds of doing this would have show you that The House Always Wins I has the first "step" to talk with Mr. House at the Lucky 38. Right then and there you could have loaded your most recent save or autosave and avoided failing this quest.

Thank you for the lecture, but if I may raise a couple of points:

1) I said that I had one save prior to entering V11 - not one save overall. I've been playing RPGs for around 15 years now, and know how what I'm doing. I run three "working saves" which I alternate between (plus the Quicksave slot), allowing me to go back as much as an hour in case of any file corruption or simply messing myself up. I also "archive" a save file when I reach what I believe to be a key event - launching the Repconn rocket and entering Vault 11 are two examples of this. I currently have around seven or eight save files for New Vegas - quicksave, my alternating "current saves", and various key events. My point about having a 15-hour-old save for V11 was that I have since continued the game as normal, with no indication that anything was wrong. I could go back to it easily enough, but the subsequent 15 hours of gameplay that I've put into NV would be a complete waste - this is not something I am prepared to do just because the developers can't write decent code.

2) Regardless of "pathways", I refuse to accept that the series of events I have been forced into are pre-planned or remotely intentional. Are you honestly telling me that it makes sense to have Victor speak to me in a nice, friendly, storyline-following manner at each major city (even after the V11 incident), then speak to me again as I enter the Strip (even though he's not actually Victor, he's a standard Securitron) asking me very nicely to see Mr House, who has kindly offered me his hospitality (no indication of hostility whatsoever in the dialogue, no mention of the V11 incident), then have Victor's corpse suddenly appear from nowhere on the steps of the Lucky 38 (although there has been no combat and, indeed, no actual appearance of a real, named, Victor-bot), and then,to add insult to injury, magically bring Victor back to life inside the Lucky 38 to suddenly start shooting at me? That is NOT a feature, that is shoddy coding.

I get that Mr House could be seen as tricking me into letting my guard down. I get that Victor can be any Securitron. I get that he could die but still jump into another robot. However, if this is an intentional branching of the storyline then I would expect at least a minor reference to it when I'm in dialogue with one of the related parties. I'd also like some reference to Victor's (and Mr House's) bipolar disorder if that's what's causing them to be friendly one minute and psychotic the next. God knows I've had girlfriends like that. Finally, even if you explained all of that away, can you tell me what the deal is with the magic robot corpse on the casino steps?

No, I didn't think so.

I was planning on finishing my current game and then going through it again on hardcoe. I was fully prepared to put another 30-40 hours into it; hell I was prepared to fork out for the DLCs. However, when I find out that the last 15 hours of gameplay have been a complete waste I have to draw the line. You may as well hit me with the spoilers, because I have no intention of picking this product up again without a fix for this situation.

Fallout: New Vegas is still buggy, still poorly-built, and still screwing over long-time fans who have paid very good money for a supposedly-finished product. A month or so back I reviewed the game for a large website, and despite all the plus-points I could raise I still had to warn my readers that the sorry state of the software quality made it a risky purchase that I couldn't in good conscience recommend to them. I shall now have to go back and reiterate my warning to ensure that no more readers feel the urge to buy software from this cowboy operation - no pun intended.
