Fallout: New Vegas ... Is it playable?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 9:55 pm

Fallout New Vegas is, in my opinion, a incredibly great game that is unfortunately rendered virtually unplayable by a catastrophically high number of bugs and glitches. FNV was first released with no less than several hundred bugs. In October, many were patched, but since then at least as many new ones have cropped up. I am the type of player that enjoys beating all, or most, the content in games like this to complete my experience. Personally, in my PS3 version of the game (fully patched with the latest updates), I am forced to maintain 10-12 different saves at any given point. At least twice in any given game-playing session, my game freezes. I am forced to completely power down my game console and reboot. I realized this early, hence my incredibly frequent saves (which tend to be about one save every five minutes). However, my current game has no less than four (4) quests that are unbeatable to me now because of bugs and glitches. Furthermore, I have reached a point at which two (2) entire engame series (including that for the NCR, my favorite) have become unavailable to me because of these glitches. These are not unique to me; I have found instances of the same ones across the internet, and so has everyone else. Then, of course, I often encounter the same smaller bugs that everyone does, such as being unable to move in a certain location (like climbing a mountain and becoming stuck).

I have played all of the Fallout games, and loved them all. I love NV as well. But the fact remains that the mass release and fully updated version of this game has more bugs than almost any BETA version of similar games that I have tested and played. I now am literally unable to finish NV. I raise the question to whoever reads this... Is this game playable? Is it worth the money? Does it provide an engrossing, dynamic gaming experience? Or are you, like me, so often plagued by bugs and glitches that your experience of this Fallout game has been ruined?

Bethesda, let me know when ALL of the bugs and glitches of this game have been fixed, not just a paltry couple hundred, and I might consider playing it again. And please do not make the same mistakes for Elder Scrolls V or any other future games. I am willing to wait a couple more months for the release of any game if it means that the game will be fully playable. Until then, thanks, but I'm finished.

No game has no bugs by the way. NO game.

It depends on the person, for example I have had little to no bugs. Others, like yourself have been caught in a storm of bugs.

I would recommend just trying it.

Just trying it? I have. I said I love it. I have tried it so much that I have found almost every known bug in the game, because I like to try and beat as many quests in the game as I can. There are just so many bugs that I don't feel like I am having a good game experience.

I got this game seven days ago for Christmas, and within the first hour of game play it crashed and over the course of these last 7 days it has crashed "froze" a total of 15 times and counting, that's right 15 crashes in 7 days, after the latest patch was installed.

Seriously? I mean seriously?

You're right, no game is perfect. But I have yet to play a game with this amount of bugs in it, especially small, essential game play features completely ruining the game (I already ranted about the bugs I experienced in a new thread so I won't start here). What's worse is that they released a patch 3 weeks ago that apparently fixed hundreds of bugs. Now I never played the game before hand so I have no idea how bad it may have been but right now, with my game Fully patched and a brand new file. I am having the experience of beta testing a game, rather than being captivated by it.

That is Bad Business on Bethesda's End (I know they didn't develop it, but they published it and paid for the development. They were in control of Quality, Deadlines, etc). And it is definitely bad workmanship on Obsidian's End.

I think it differs alot from person to person, I've had a couple of freezes but sometimes I'm lucky enough to just hit the PS button and it will unfreeze... That is sometimes and if I'm lucky

Everytime I play there is always at least 1 freeze if I play for more than 30 mins but after that it usually runs smoothly, if I got any really big complaints is the seldom but horrible occurances of the enemies walking into solid objects whilst being able to attack me but I can't attack them, There is also this random risk that my Archimedes II C-Locator won't fire properly but it has only happened once and I've played this game since the 24th of december

This being said I love this game and if I have ANY problem with this game right now it would be some small issues and the fact I can't get that DLC cause I play on the PS3, But still... I guess patience will eventually lead to me having that DLC

Thank you for the topic. I was waiting to buy this game until I was sure the game was playable.

I had the same types of problems with FO3, and swore I would not buy any more Bethesda Software games until I was sure these bugs were not present. Apparently, this game has the same freezing issues that I was having in FO3. Count me in a lost customer due to these bugs. I LOVE rpg's, and I do not expect a bug-free open world game. I do, however, expect a game that is playable. To me, any game that locks up my system continuously is non-playable.

PS. No one is going to ever ever convince me that these system freezing lock-ups are not harmful to my system.

I couldnt agree more, I grew to hate FO3 and thought NV wud be better, Smoother more playable..... How silly of me to think they would improve it, its unplayable at best, certainly not enjoyable. If you have an original ps3 then dont even think about putting it in the drive, u might aswell cut out the middleman and chuck the ps in the bin.... less stressfull in my oppinion.

Do be convinced that it DOES harm your system. I used to play Fallout 3 a lot, and it didn't amount to getting a new 360. I would sometimes play it for 3-5 hours with no crashing and then sometimes I would play it 20 minutes into the game and it would freeze. As it got worse, and froze, it really hurt my 360. I've gotten 2 replacement Xbox 360s because of Fallout 3, and now Fallout NV is freezing, and I don't plan on getting the red ring of death for the 5th time. SO my suggestions are to wait till they get it fixed, IF they get it fixed of course. Bigggg disapointment Bethesda.

P.S. there is lots of responses on Youtube of it screwing up PS3s, and it seems like NV is freezing worse then F3. So be aware...

The only people I have ever heard that freezing lock-ups don't harm a system are the ones who sell systems. I understand a few lock-ups but will not tolerate it regularly (AT ALL). I would think a a class action lawsuit ought to take care of that crap once and for all. If the irresponsible software companies were suddenly to become financially responsible for the systems they crash, change would surely come. Until it makes economic sense for them, nothing will change. I remember when Ford was sued for defective fuel tank designs they actually calculated the cost of whether a law suit or a recall would cost them more. They decided a law suit would be less costly. When people were killed, the amounts of the lawsuit awards were staggering. It was only then that they issued the recalls. I'm not comparing a loss of life to the loss of a PS3, but it is the same reality. Unless it makes economic sense, nothing will change.
