If anyone at Bethesda wants to green light a sequel, I'd be glad to help out. And heck, I'll do it for free. :)

Dang, you guys are giving me fewer and fewer reasons to leave these forums. Kudos for bringing the love.

I wonder if Bethesda would create the sequel if one was to be made, as they only published DCOTE but did not develop it if I recall correctly. Headfirst Interactive developed it.

Currently there's no announced plans for a sequel.

Probably not like the 'currently there's no announced plans for a new game in the TES series' thing, but more like the 'currently there's no announced plans for a sequel to our Home Alone NES game'. :P

I would be completely okay with it if the 'next big project' bethesda was working on was a sequel to CoC and not the much-expected TESV.

Ah if only. :P

But if you happen to be interested in an upcoming isometric turn based RPG in a Lovecraftian horror setting... http://www.irontowerstudio.com/forum/index.php?board=9.0

A turn based horror game, yeah.

Even though I know I shouldn't, I've been toying with the idea of starting a Cthulhu mod. I'd probably use the FO3 engine. I'm open to suggestions about content/time period/implementation details, etc. I know how to make textures/meshes/animations for Oblivion and I know how to use the Geck, so it shouldn't be too much of a strain to port that knowledge over to FO3. This is just some 'for fun' speculation/discussion and might not go anywhere. :)

More random musings.

I did a bit more thinking about this and came up with some clearer objectives.

A Cthulhu-mythos mod that attempts to recreate 'Lovecraft country' in the FO3 engine, including the most important locations in the stories. Players would essentially take on the role of investigators (detectives, reporters, scientists, etc.) trying to solve the mysteries of the Cthulhu-mythos in order to avert disaster.

Although the players would be quite over-matched by the creatures of the Cthulhu-mythos, there would be a couple of things working in their favor: they could use explosives and other sorts of scientific and occult means of defeating their opponents, and they could enlist the aid of followers to provide things like muscle, medical care, translation skills, investigative skills, etc. Some of these followers (like historians, medical doctors, etc.) would only serve as a support team, staying out of direct conflict in 'safe zones'. Others would follow the player into dangerous locations as well (like soldiers, police officers, etc.). Unlike the vanilla game, where followers tend to unbalance the game in the player's favor, the followers in this mod would help to balance the game to bring the player back into line with the creatures.

Most of the game mechanics could be used as is with primarily cosmetic changes to the interface: the hacking skill could be changed to a linguistic skill used to decipher cryptic messages in dead languages (just change the terminal interface to an old book interface and the jumbled letters with cryptic characters); the lockpicking mini-game would just need a new skin to make it look like a brass lock on a wood door or something similar; the main changes would have to be to the pip boy interface to make it look more like a classic inventory menu with maps, an old journal, etc. The VATS system would have to be disabled, the HUD retooled, and a sanity system created. These are the primary game-play changes that would have to be made, but I believe they are all possible with the engine.

The biggest barrier to achieving this would be the creation of custom content; pretty much all of it would have to be created from scratch. Hopefully, some talented modelers, texture artists, and musicians could be persuaded to assist. :hehe:

The goal of the mod would be to create a mature, faithful reproduction of the Cthulhu mythos that emphasizes atmosphere, horror, and good detective work over senseless combat. (Although the combat that is there should be realistic, gory, and intense.) At least, that's what I'd vote for.

I'd love to hear what other people have to think about the idea. There has to be someone who'd be interested in a mod like this. Other than myself, of course. :)

I'm sure you could find lots of people interested in a mod like this but making a (near) Total Conversion is an immense undertaking requiring a dedicated team and considerable time. From a purely pragmatic perspective something like this seems unlikely to be finished.

With At the Mountains of Madness being turned in to a film it does seem likely that a game will follow. It probably won't be a Bethesda-esq open-world RPG but hopefully whatever developer gets the project does the material justice. :)

Oh, it's definitely pie-in-the-sky thinking, but that's just how I roll. :hehe:

I've started working on a tileset now that I've got the nif format pretty much down for statics. I just need to work out a couple of details about using multiple collision materials in a single nif and figure out how to get the textures to tile nicely between pieces. Once I have some screenies I'll open a WIP thread on the FO3 forum. Just thought I'd catch some interest here.

I think the FO3 engine is the perfect engine for this sort of thing. It'd be a shame to let a good opportunity for a real Call of Cthulhu mod to pass us by.

Hi man, I read your post and it looks good except the fact that I would rather like something more like one-man horror, because i think that when you have so many people in there it isn't so scary, but maybe I'm wrong. If you want to look at my works for fun, click there

I have some photoshop skills (but not that good), I could help you with the plot cause I am a writer, but ye I haven't written much in english hmm. I could draw scenes, models, objects anything (i mean on paper). It's a shame that you don't speak czech language because once I made a RPG game in my language, it's that style with steps, but i can send it to your mail..

There's something to be said for being all alone, true. But you wouldn't have to bring the companions along with you. Many of them wouldn't come with you anyway, and would just serve ancillary roles, translating cryptic texts, patching up your wounds, giving you meds to calm your nerves, etc.

Besides, it's possible to be afraid for your companions. Most horror movies have multiple characters, after all, though it's not typical of Lovecraft. I wouldn't expect most of the followers that come with you to live very long anyway; they'd mostly serve as cannon-fodder...like the other characters in horror movies. Watching your companions getting ripped limb from limb would definitely have an impact on your sanity.
