[REQ] - A bigger, badder Strip?

Post » Thu Apr 07, 2011 5:16 pm

I just want to preface by saying that I am LOVING New Vegas thus far. I put off reaching the strip for so long, just to draw out the anticipation. Then, when I finally got there, I was kinda shocked...where were the merchants? Where were the crazy religious extremists? Where were the up-and-coming businesses just waiting for a shot at the big time?

To me, Mr. House still glows of Andrew Ryan, but Vegas is not the Rapture I expected. I guess what I'm asking is this: is there any mod out there, or is anyone making a mod that will fill in the gaps in the strip? I'm talking shops, vendors, thieving children, and LOTS more visiting folks. Is this doable? Has it been done? Any thoughts? (Extra points to anyone who makes a shop based purely off of Nuka-Cola or a tailors!)

I was also a little disappointed with the size of the strip 2. As well as the amount of people in freeside. It's supposed to be a dangerous area but I never felt unsafe got attacked or whatsoever. And you hear a lot of people talking but there are actually no people on the streets! So I'm really disappointed in both actually. I've been working on some new casino's myself lately in 3d max...So far I allmost finished two...and I'm working on the third one. They are not very big ones like the vanilla ones but more like http://www.dieiscast.com/wp-content/uploads/biffsclub.jpg cos I would like to stay somewhat true to the lore I guess. However it takes a huge amount of time and I have little experience with the engine/editor ever since oblivion came out lol. I'm working on this on my own tempo which means it's probably never going to be released or mabey in a few years lol ;). But other than that I bet there will be other people who will work on something similar like this but it's going to take some time. They just released an "open strip" mod which removes the doors etc...and they still have to do a lot of scripting etc to get it to fully work with the npc's and such....so we still have a long way to go i guess....I should say...open up the GECK and start modding yourself ;)!

i do like the look of the long, open Strip, but i think what I'm asking could apply to that Strip, as well...basically, I'd like to make the strip busier than an airport at christmas time. I was thinking maybe i'd buy Veronica a dress once i got to the Strip. Little did I realize there were no shops ><

-snip-

Yes I underwhlemed with both very much, but the problem really lies within the engine. The limits for how many NPCs in a cell are pathetic.

A Nuka Cola shop would be nice, so would a "Tailor Maid" shop, and a "Lings Finer Things". Maybe even shop shop with trinkets from the capital wasteland. I don't know how many visitors would be there since the entry price is so high for Vegas. But the shops in there should be exotic.

Just for those who are not aware, assets that are available in FO3 are also available in FO:NV, hint, Cuppa Joe for the strip.

Not all of them, not even close. I've been working on quite a few things, and there's a ton of materials I'd like to have that I don't.

I wonder if this is fixable or is this just really an engine limitation. Would be cool to add a lot more crowd on the streets? :/

Engine limitation. It's old. Very old, in the case of game engines. Which is probably why Beth is taking so long to announce a new Elder Scrolls. If you took down some lights, I guess it would be possible to put more NPCs on the streets, but take a look at the script that runs the strip itself. It's pretty complicated. If the Strip were to be made into an interior, that could work too, but not as cool. Sacrifices have to be made, and it's all based on taste.

I believe you can fake a sky in an interior cell, basically trick the player into thinking it's an exterior, not sure though.

I'm very new to programming, so help me out, here...if i were to upgrade my computer as far as is feasable today, would it be possible to push the engine further? say, make a longer, busier Strip? or is this too much to ask for?

It would be amazing to have a coffee shop on the corner in post-apocalyptic vegas...I don't even care if I could buy anything from it, just a nod to starbucks foolishness would satisfy me.

Also, I've been wondering about those dividing walls, splitting the Strip in thirds...I think it would be possible to streamline that a bit, just by making the streets seem busier...maybe a junk door so you can walk through a construction area? or a gate between small shops? (please tell me someone knows what I'm talking about...)

No, your computer has no impact on the performance of the engine.
