ATI {[(x1xxx)]} series possible crash solution

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 9:35 am

I have an ati radeon x1950 pro, whose driver are not officially supported by windows 7, things that makes them a little (very very little though) unstable. So i manually disinstalled my 10.2 driver and installed the 9.9 (1 year old, first to be "compatible" with W7). Well, tell you what, no crashes in 1 hour and a half. With the 10.2 a crash occurred like every 20 mins. Ill tell you any news.

Never frget the unofficial driver updates for both older cards and older Windows OSes that are available from Omega's site. The reason that Bethesda ignored the X700 and X800 cards for Fallout 3 and jumped to the X850 was AMD having dropped all but the 850 from their drivers, but I ran Fallout 3 with an X800 Pro for a test, with which it ran very well, IMO.

Not that long ago, in the Fallout 3 Tech forum, another member here was equating the physical AGE for the X1950 cards as automatic presumption of obsolescence, and I added the following quote to a message of yours there:

The X1950 is closer to the HD 3850 performance by quite a bit, than it is to the X850.

An X1950 Pro is getting somewhat long in the tooth, but hasn't fallen far enough to cause a lot of problems for its owners:

- ATI Radeon HD 3800 series
- ATI Radeon HD 4600 series
- ATI Radeon HD 2900 series
- ATI Radeon X1950 series
- ATI Radeon X1900 series
- NVIDIA GeForce 7900 series
- ATI Radeon X1800 series
- ATI Radeon X850 series

That's the way the Radeon ranks looked when the 3800s were new, and I know that the HD 2900 XT actually was faster than an HD 3850, but the developers seem to prefer to lump them all together, so the "series" averages moved the 2900s there same as the individual ranks of the HD 4670 and HD 3850 don't show up (roughly equal for speed).

P. S. The above is a development of the lists created for Oblivion by NTK.
