Rage for PC - 60 Dollars?

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 11:25 pm

I hate to make my first post a negative one, but you guys just lost yourselves a customer. I will not support the increase in price for PC games.

The one thing about prices you can count on is, they do go up.

It was just a matter of time for the price increase. It's just 10 more. But the day brand new games hit $80 is the day I'll quit playing for good. If they hit $70, I'll only buy the ones I know will be good. I still take a few gambles now, but it's getting hard to buy games that have no prequel or any reputation with the $60 price.

It's unfortunate, but unless PC gamers refuse to buy at that price en masse, unlikely to change. You could always wait a while before buying Rage (or any similarly priced PC game), till the price lowers or some sort of game + DLC compilation is released.

I don't mind, personally. It's rare that I'm interested enough in a game to want to buy it at launch, and for those few, even an inflated price is likely to be dwarfed by the hours of entertainment provided.

Huh. I went straight a while ago, got a Steam account, but there are no games I cannot take. Well none so far.

Prices go up...it's a fact of life. In 1969, I bought a brand new Volkswagen Beetle for US$1836. That's the average annual bill just for auto insurance in the US this year.

If I swore back then that was the most I was paying for a car, I'd have spent the past 30 years driving 10 year old wrecks.

Actually, prices do go down in certain conditions, but you really don't want to be living through one of those periods.

Don't think of it as the price of the item went up... think of it more as the actual value of that paper in your wallet went down. Not sure that will make you any happier, but at least the "blame" will be heading in the right direction at least.

I don't mind, as it seems to be the new standard.

Oh please; these kinds of posts crack me up. Do you know how much the original Quake cost when it was released in 1996? $45. Do you know how much that is in today's dollars when you adjust for inflation? About $63. Quake was made by about 13 developers in about 2 years. For Rage, it's around 70 developers for 4+ years because the technology is so vastly more complex.

You're getting a bargain.

If a $60 price tag means you'll wait for the price to go down that's your prerogative.

However if game prices followed standard inflation they'd be nearing $100 a pop today, instead prices have remained pretty consistent over the past twenty years. They've even remained pretty consistent despite the cost of developement going through the roof; if you take the cost of production and inflation into account game prices have been decreasing at a steady clip over the past twenty years and it's one of the reasons publishers tend to have a blockbuster mentality now whereas before they would cater to fairly niche markets.

I will add to keep this well round that it's probably been five years since I picked up a game during it's release week, maybe even longer. And the last game I pre-ordered was probably Morrowind. Around 2005/2006 my computer became sufficiently outdated that it wasn't worth picking up new releases because it was unlikely I could play them and I didn't pick up a new system until the summer of 2008. At that time I had quite a back log of games I wanted to get through and honestly I've still got one so I'm happy to wait a bit before picking up newer games. (Bethesda titles are an exception but I get those for free for being a moderator.)

Most new PC games here retail at around £30/35. Gamestation often stocks them cheaper than the RRP at around £20/25. I doubt I'll see RAGE selling for more than £30. Even if it was £40 on PC I'd be getting it though, I've waited too long. lol Waiting longer for a price drop would kill me. :D
