Is this true?

I've never been much of a shooter fan and none have ever really appealed to me enough to buy them. I've never played a shooter before, only demos, and I've read some pretty impressive things about this game. I would like some confirmation/denial of these things and, although I will not pre-order the game, I would like to know if you think RAGE is worth keeping an eye on for a person such as myself. I've always enjoyed RPGs of any kind, but specifically, I like open world RPGs. I assume the closest game to RAGE that I've played is Fallout 3 and I love Fallout 3. I've read that RAGE is an open world shooter with some minor RPG elements that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. I've also read that it runs at 60 fps on consoles while boasting very impressive graphics. That sounds a bit unusual and the sheer technical genius that must have went into the software powering the game is enough to make me interested in the game... and that's exactly what it's done. In addition, I read that six years was spent making this game. I don't know what that may mean for the amount of content this game will have, but I'd like to know how much content this game has in single-player mode. Does Id typically focus on single-player experiences? That's something else I enjoy, so the presence of a very large single-player experience is crucial to my purchasing of any game. If this is not the case with RAGE, it is not for me, but I don't know if it is or isn't the case.

In short, my main questions are:

1. Is this game truly open world? Does it allow free-roaming exploration and provide a unique, varied gameworld of decent size? Is it a seamless gameworld?

2. How much single-player content will the game feature?

3. Are these technical claims true? Does the game really look as good as I've been led to believe? If those two things are true, how did they possibly achieve that with the current console generation?

4. Would this game be supported on the PS3 just as well as on the 360 and PC, based on Id's past history/comments? I don't want a lackluster port.

5. Would this be a game worth closely watching as a candidate for an introduction into first-person shooters, assuming I like post-apocalyptic settings, open worlds, and single-player experiences?

1. Yes it is open world, there is an interactive map on the game's website that shows some of the major locations, you should check it out if you haven't already. We have not been told how big it would be or if it will be 'seamless' (to my knowledge).

2. I did not know it had multiplayer, if it does then I don't know how much content is in it.

3. Yes, they have been working on this engine for a while and RAGE will be the first game using it. That was the deal maker for me.

4. I hope so, I'm a PS3 user and hate how it usually gets the short end of the stick.

5. I like all of that stuff too so I think it will must likely be a good introduction to shooters.

It is supposed to be an open world game with driving, exploration and some side quests, so I expect it to be fairly big, bigger than your usual shooter. I don't think anybody except the devs know exactly how big it is at this point, how much content is there etc. We will probably only know that when the game is out.

Many journalists saw the 3 versions run side by side at last years Quakecon, and they all said it looked great and ran fast on all of them.

My suggestions:

  • Watch the Trailer video (all of it is actual gameplay)
  • Watch the Gameplay videos of some of the weapons
  • Youtube it (always a good idea)

As far as a comparison to Fallout 3? This runs on a completely different engine (which makes ALL of the difference, gameplay-wise) and uses minimal RPG elements, so they don't have much in common besides the fact that they both are set in post-apocalyptic environments.

Much of what you want to know is available on the main site or will be available later.

ALSO, from what I can tell, you know about as much as we do about the game as of right now. So, what else should you do? A lot of information is conveyed through these official forums, so check back every now and then to see what's happening. Everything, from magazine articles to new videos, are shared through links on these threads.

Hope this helped!

You have to buy it! Not only by the claims of previous reviews but because IP is the new parents of fps!

Looks like most of your questions got answered. but for the #4, where youre asking about the porting over..

Well, thats antoher great thing that they are touting about the Tech5 engine- they were able to write the game so it just works across PC< 360 and PS3... no ports needed. ..

I do have one more question about the Tech 5 engine, however. How in the world did they create an engine that is looks as great as it is, runs at 60 fps on the consoles, is multiplatform, and is powering a game with an open world? It seems unbelievable. How did they achieve this?

well id makes great games, the AI in id games is really good, the game mechanics in their games are very good and the environments are pretty darn good, i play wolfenstein and its pretty solid and the game world is fun. but Rage is gonna have a pretty big open world from what i've heard.

from what i've gathered RAGE will pre-load open world sections so there shouldn't be any considerable loading times or 'hub levels'. also -- it's not an RPG, so don't expect the level of interactivity of another fallout. it's too early to speculate on anything else. as for your #3: the game is first and foremost a PC game (although this time it's actually being developed as a multi platform game but i digress), and tbh technology like this is long overdue. today's top of the line PCs are capable of FAR more than this, but the technology has been held back by consoles and the revenue associated with them. tech5 has been in development for a LONG time, and i'm willing to bet we would have seen this game mid last year or even earlier if it had been platform specific, and if it hadn't been for the multi-platform business and the compatibility/tweaking that comes with it.
