September keep it simple

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:41 pm

With major releases due out in September, will Rage perform well against the competition? Not Id/Bethesda....Rage, the game as a single entity. Before posting go to VGChartz.com and look at pre-sale orders and how they stack up against each other.

Gears 3 pre-orders and Rage pre-orders would be good to look at.

Then ask yourself if you really care how well Rage does, if you do...ask them to consider moving the release date.

If this thread gets shut down, ask yourself why you think that is...really....

VGChartz doesnt have a lot of official data, most of it is just a guesstimate, and they correct it when they have real data from actual market research firms like NPD. Their data is based on estimates extrapolated from small retail samples, and they offer no info on their methodology. They employ like 10 people. I wouldn't take their pre-order data seriously.

That said, it's obvious that the 3rd installment of an established series will have more preorders than a new IP, no matter what. You can't really move forward the release date of Rage if the game is not ready (surely you don't want them to release an unfinished game), and if they push it back, they will just run into other heavyweights, like BF3.

Rage will be available on 3 platforms, both GoW3 and R3 are platform exclusives. KoA is a 2012 title, Forza is a completely different genre, and afaik Rachet doesn't have a september release date, only "fall" (and it is completely different anyway).

Going by past Bethesda titles, Rage will be fairly heavily marketed, and Quakecon is right before the release date, where it will receive tons of coverage. id software still has a lot of fans, and the game itself looks good in previews, and received tons of "Best of E3" awards last year. If it ends up being as good as we hope, it won't have trouble finding an audience.

From a purely personal POV, I just don't want them to delay it any further, I want to play it yesterday.

(I didn't vote btw.)

I will eat the carcass of a dead raccoon taken from the side of the road if Rage's sales across 3 platforms is anywhere near Gears 3 sales. If you guys owned the company, you would think differently. They have a better chance in a different month slot. As far as the game not being ready??? LOL--its ready, its been done since last year.

"its ready, its been done since last year. "

How do you know that, and why do you think they've been sitting on it for a year? Not releasing a completed game for months wouldn't make a lot of sense.

As for Gears selling more than Rage, that is probably true, but Rage doesn't have to outsell Gears to be financially succesfull. It can come second, and still sell well, and make a lot of money.

Which month do you propose Rage should be released?

How do you know it isn't complete???June or July--looking at a list of all releases for those months, no contender like Gears franchise anywhere near those months. And, no shooter with MP anywhere near those months. Hey, and if the game isn't done by July, it sure in the hell won't be ready by Sept. Games are usually finished or being polished several months before release--they have had what 7 years? 8 years? LOL I'm done...

Well, for starters, the developer says it isn't ready, and they probably know more about it then you do.
I know it isn't complete, because it's not released yet, it isn't even gold yet, and they don't even talk about some parts of the game, like multiplayer yet. What do you think they are doing these days, looking at the calendar, trying to pick a release date?
Games are usually content complete months before release, but thats very far from being finished. There is a lot of bug-fixing, balancing, fine-tuning, polishing, netcode-improving and performane-optimizing to do. If you skip that part, the game is gonna be a buggy, unbalanced, unoptimized mess. In that case it surely wont sell, unless there is a well known brand name attached to it which people would blindly buy. Rage is a new IP, you can't afford to release it half-assed. (and to be honest, we don't even know if Rage is content complete yet.)

Devs and Pubs usually don't pick a release date after the game is complete. They pick one in advance, on which they can realistically release according to their plans and current progress. There is probably a good reason they didn't pick June or July - the game won't be ready yet. Also, do you think nobody at id or bethesda is aware of Gears3? They knows it's coming in the same month, but they still think they can sell enough to make their own game a success.

Not to mention June and July are usually quiet months in the games industry. The only big game that was released in those moths and sold really well recently is Starcraft2, which is also a sequel of an already well known game. (I might be missing sth tho...) It's August when the sales usually pick up again. If they finish the game ahead of schedule, they will probably try to bring the release date forward to August, but it's just as possible that they have to delay it again, because it's still won't be done by mid-sept. In the end, they picked the current date because thats when they think they'l be ready

"Hey, and if the game isn't done by July, it sure in the hell won't be ready by Sept"

That statement doesn't make any sense, unless there is some mythical force that prevents them from working on the game in July and August. It's absolutely possible that they couldn't finish sth 'till July on which they could work on in those two months.

"they have had what 7 years? 8 years? LOL I'm done... "

The game was officially announced in August 2007. Sure, they've been working on it before that, but I doubt it was for 3-4 years. Also id is a smaller studio than most other AAA FPS devs. That means they take more time, but their budgets are somewhat smaller. They built a new engine too, instead of just adding some minor stuff to an already existing one. New IPs always take longer even when you don't make new tech for it, because you cannot reuse assets from the previous games.

Rage

It's Id Software made and Bethesda published, so you know the quality and soul is there. :celebration:

None of those other games interest me.

Are people on forums this dense? Its not about which game you "like"...its about which one you think will get the most sales and instead of arguing about if the game is done or if Id will still be successful, lets talk a bout SALES...got it...which game will get more SALES?

I called this thread keep it simple and people just want to purposfully complicate it...whateverz

Its funny that people actually voted that Rage would get more sales...that vote is just a dishonest attempt at sarcasm. People who voted that way won't let you know that they voted that way.

Rage doesn't have to outsell Gears to be financially succesfull.

This is my sentiment.

I think if marketed right, it could take the show.
but, even if it doesnt, it will sell a lot of copies and win a lot of awards, where it will continue to sell a lot of copies.

They also dont have to necessarily be in direct competition.
It's also not as if everyone will be like, "I can't (ever) buy Rage, cause I bought Gears"

When it's all said and done, I think Rage's innovation will put it on top.

Rage will be successful, just no where near as successful as it could be with an early release, again, if you own a company...you want it to be as successful as possible. The reason you espouse the sentiment that "it doesn't have to out-sell Gears to be successful" is because you don't care of HOW successful they are. You guys can't see the huge mistake being made with the September release...because you don't care at the DEGREE of how successful Rage is. Trust me Id is not dumb, they are doing this for some unknown reason. No representative from Id will explain it---why is that?

"they are doing this for some unknown reason. No representative from Id will explain it---why is that? "

Are you insisting that they are purposefully sabotaging their own game?

"lets talk a bout SALES...got it...which game will get more SALES?"

No, you didn't just talk about sales, in the OP, you suggested the idea to move the release date, which I found to be a bad idea. Remeber Sin? It looked good in previews, and ppl loved the demo, then they rushed the game out early to beat Half-Life to the market. Well, Sin ended up being a buggy mess, it failed, and is now largely forgotten. Releasing a game half-baked is never a good idea no matter what, and there is nothing to indicate that Rage is ready, and could be released in June/July.

Like CannibalClub said, people can buy both Rage and Gears, and both can be successful. The first Left 4 Dead launched in the same month as Gears 2, do you think that was a failure? Not to mention that people who play on PC or PS3 won't even have the option to buy Gears.

"Id is not dumb"

That I agree with, moreover, they probably have some actual preorder data, unlike any of us. If they really think the release date is a problem, they will do something about it.

i agree, id and bethesda is a winning combo, gears will prob sell more i suppose, it has a huge fanbase, its a good game also but its not my type of game and its mostly mutliplayer, rage is gonna be a great game, i'm not too worried about sales, i already pre ordered it.

I'd say Gears will outsell all of them. Though I don't play Gears or ever care for it. I just know Gears has a major audience.
It doesn't really matter to me because I can't wait for RAGE! all the other titles can take a back burner.

So, from two of the last posts I gathered that the people who posted agree that Gears will sell more copies, but hey--they don't care because they are RAGE fans and they pre-ordered it and whatever....lol...Thats great, but if you owned the company you would think differently.

also, I saw that people were implying that the game will be buggy if released early....RELEASED EARLY--holy smokes....they have been making this game for 7 effing years...John carmack is a brilliant guy and I don't think any game he makes will be buggy. It may have some bugs, but it won't be overwrought with bugs. 7 years...

you guys are arguing, just to be arguing and obviously don't understand business...

"if you owned the company, you'd think differently"
but thats just the thing... for all of your insistnace that we would think differently if we owned the company,
you are the one thinking differently than the people that own the company.

Perhaps you are a shareholder at Id or Beth and want to voice your concern.
thats cool.. I could see an investor wanting to maximize their return.

At the same time, Beth's track record shows that it knows business. Look how much they have acquired in the past couple of years.
Thats not by luck. It's knowing how to run a business.

One can only speculate on "how done" the game is as well.
they have been working on it for some time, yes. but they know when it will be ready better than anyone.

just 360.

as opposed to PC, PS3 and 360

I am wondering if there are any PC FPS players that won't get this game, given that its thanks to Id that FPS is even a genre.
Thnk about how huge that demographic is- just on the PC side.

Now we are just starting to run in circles, but I still don't know where are you pulling the 7 years bs from. That would mean id had to start working on it right after Doom3, but that wasn't the case, as Carmack was still working on the tech4 (Doom3) engine, adding things to it, mainly the megatexture stuff. They were also cooperating with other companies on Quake4 and ETQW, tho the bulk of that work was done by Raven and Splash Damage. Like i said before, Rage was first shown in June 2007 and officially announced in August the same year. I doubt they have been working on it for 3-4 years before that, with all the other stuff they've been doing.

If you are a longtime id fan (like most of us here), you should know by now that they release a game "when it's done". They know better when it's done than any of us. I still don't know why are you thinking it's done, when there is nothing to indicate that. You don't know what state the game is in more than any of us, you are just guessing based on your false assumption that it's been in development for 7 years. I'm inclined to beleive the developer more than you regarding the state of the game.

Of course I care about the company, I'm a big id fan, I have many of their games on my shelf, and all Doom & Quake games on my Steam account. I just, unlike you, beleive that Rage can absolutely be a success in September, and I think it's more important to polish a game to near-perfection (especially if it's a new IP), than to [censored] around with the release date for whatever reason. I trust id to deliver a game that people will want to buy, and I trust Bethesda to be able to market it and sell it. Looking at their past history you should too.

Gears will dominate the 360 market, no doubt, but many fans are waiting to see what the new engine can do.

So it depends how much the PC market jumps on board the new IP. It could be really massive. If it was Doom 4 instead, Gears would be left in the dust....

I think another selling point of this game that some are over looking is not that it will be realeased agains the big 3. but that it was also made to work right the first time across all three.
no porting.

its not goign to be as if PC gamers wont get the game bexcause it was made for a console and it didnt prot well.
likewise, IIRC, 60 PFS is somthign thats notr eally been done on consoles.

How does this bode for Gears 3 Vs Rage? You do the math.
