I know i am not supposed to say whether i took it but i did anyway around 28 or so just to clear up any leftovers i could not find. I could have used a Wiki map and done it that way but as i had pretty much all the perks i wanted anyway i burned one and took it. It is easier to find the locations with the locations marked so you can set a map marker and walk to it.
As far as the effect on the DLC goes it does not matter to me one way or another. If i play with a character who chose to take the Explorer perk i want the map markers to show up. Just because the markers are there does not mean that i donot have to walk at least once to the location so it does not blow the immersion. On the contrary it actually helps with immersion i feel because i find it a bit silly that any NPC who lives in an area could not tell a visitor about a few places to avoid, to visit, and some rumored locations that they have been to afraid or busy to explore for themselves. Like real life, i live in Florida, so every September to April my city clogs up with a bunch of new people or folks who have been away for 6 months and need to be brought up to speed. Directions to dinner, dancing, movie theatres, the beach, good fishing, etc etc are all part of my daily routine. I do not go to the beach, have not been to the beach in over 10 years, i work the night shift and daylight is OVERRATED, or for plants and anyone should have the good sense like rain to stay out of it. That does not mean that i can not tell you where the beach is and the easiest way to get there avoiding the senior crowd chasing the early bird specials so they can be home before the street lights come on. In a game to have this information provided by an NPC (local) seems normal to me and the only issue i have with the perk is that the information comes from nowhere, i should have to talk to a NPC once the perk is chosen to get the map markers, and yes ANY NPC should do but only if you have the perk. Even if you have never been to a city before somewhere there is some sort of direction finding device, a map or local willing to provide either.
