Someone please explain the music system to me.

As is my habit, I want to throw in a stack of dark ambient tracks for my personal use. This was easy enough to do in Fallout 3- just rename the files appropriately and toss them in, and presto, you've got Desiderii Marginis' "Solemn Descent" playing while you're trapped in a metro tunnel. But New Vegas' music system is wildly different and strange, I'm not exactly sure how to go about adding new music or what all these different files are for. Some explanation for the low/med/high designations as well as the occasional alt-low and whatnot would be useful. I've also heard that many tracks only play at specific points in the game- some help with determining what plays where would be great.
