hi, having real trouble, in fact i cant play on!

i am on my 2nd play through and doing it in hardcoe mode, i dont have internet access at home so have never done downloaded updates for new vegas, however never had this much trouble 1st time round playing the game.
everytime i try and enter the strip from freeside it freezes during the strip load up screen, the same happens everytime i try and leave the lucky 38, have gone back to previous saves but still does the same thing.
i can enter the strip from camp mccarren but as soon as i try to leave the 38 i get the load up freeze.
could this be resolved through updates, i dont think it is the disc because the same happens with different copies.
the ps3 completely freezes so i have to reset the system.

help!
