Why is Bioshock set in the alternate 1960s, or Jade Empire in a fictional land based on mythic China? Because that's the look that the developers were going for. On top of that, the Fallout series is about all kinds of nostalgic Americana, and the 50s embodies that perfectly, as it's still within living memory and highly idealized/romanticized/stereotyped by pop culture.

Fallout is based with 1950's style because of the Nuclear War Paranoia that had absolute control over American culture at that time.

In my opinion (guess I have to start *every* statement I make from now on, because apparently I'm being "elitist") the 50sish style emerges from the idea the games are built on. Fallout was built on the ideas and fears that the U.S. had back in the '50s had in the future. Things like the Integrated Circuit were never invented in the Fallout Universe, because nobody anticipated it's invention back in the 50s. It's where ridiculous ideas like radiation turning people into monstrous beings comes from. The best way to think of it, is to think of it as the way the people in the 50s anticipated, not so much that people never moved on from the 50s style culture.

Strange, most of the references made there are from Fallout 3. I guess it just was never touched on by any other Fallout games.

What's got me is that in that article it says that Energy Weapons have become a common form of weaponry, when the way I understand it is that they were just being introduced (hence why FO 1 and 2's laser rifle were essentially portablized industrial lasers).
