We need a Rage in DVD case version without steam.

Many people don't like steam, why you force us to install this software for play Rage? No official information at moment ok but we are not stupid, we know that rage at the momet require sure steam.


PLEASE release a DVD case version without steam or a DD version on some DD store without steam, (GOG, like The witcher 2). Just a one versione of this game without steam , jesus! XD

At the moment there are far too many problems with steam exclusivity for it only come out on that. Also why is it obvious, neither id software or bethesda have ever done something that is only available from steam.

Exactly Amazon information is incorrect, is outdated.

I also dislike buying a game on DVD and you need to install Steam and / or play, it restricts my freedom to play anywhere and anytime.
But fortunately there are ways to avoid those hassles of Steam.

Doesn't matter if you buy a game in CD-form nowdays. There are already a number have games that have already done this.

While I agree you shouln't NEED to run steam to play your game offline or online, /shrug/.. its just the way it is right now.

I don't really have any problem with Steam, it works and provides me with cloud saves and achievements, two things which I've come to enjoy. I don't really see how it restricts your freedom to play it from anywhere anytime, Steam is free and can be installed on every computer, and there are no install limits on Steam games (unless the devs/publishers decides to put another DRM on top of it like SecuRom, but thats not Steam's fault, and rarely happens anyway). The offline mode works now (havent had a problem with it in years), so you only need to be online for activation and that's it.

Having the Steam version use Steamworks, and the DVD version not use them is a good thing for single player only games (The Witcher 2 can do this for example), but for games that have a multiplayer portion (like Rage) it simply doesn't work, because it fragments the community. Half of the players will be using the Steamworks version, the other half something else, and they wont be able to play with each other. Quite often these days developers don't really have the time/resources to make their own multiplayer framework/infrastructure, matchmaking, anti-cheat etc, so they go with sth already out there. Now, the options these days are Gamespy, GfWL, and Steamworks. GS is outdated and causes problems, GfWL is a complete mess, Steamworks is the least problematic of them all, and it is free for developers to use, so its no wonder many of them go with it.

I will be fine with either Steamworks, or id making their own stuff for multi, just no GfWL please.

if exist persons who do not like steam, this persons will not install in any case. play problem or not. if Bethesda forcing his games with steam, bethesda bring these people to piracy. So why force this people in this way. Is better release a DVD version without steam, or one DD version(how The Witcher 2 on GOG) without steam, to give at these people a chance to buy the original game. The other way, unfortunately, if the people don't want install steam in any case, are not original copy with programs that remove the installer of steam.

You can do that with The Witcher 2 because it doesn't have multiplayer, so the two versions don't need to be compatible. For a game like Rage that has multiplayer, you cannot release a Steamworks version for Steam, and a non-Steamworks version for retail DVDs, because those version won't be compatible, and people won't be able to play eachother. If I buy the DVD, and my friend has a Steam copy we wouldn't be able to play in that case. So if a game has multi either everything is Steamworks or nothing is.

And whats the problem with installing Steam? It's free, it's pretty lightweight, doesn't take up much hard-drive space, and uses less than 100 megs of ram when everyone who games on PC these days has gigabytes. I don't see the big deal.

I consider Steam to be least problematic DRM + it has many usefull features.

2people who [censored] about internet connection being required for instalation/activation: Where do you live? Middle od Siberia? Over here (central europe) I pay 12€ per month for 16/8Mbps connection (no data limits).

Believe it or not there are huge swaths of land that are potentially bigger than a lot of the EU nations that do not have hardwired coxial cable as part of their communications infrastructure.. In those places, unless youre cool with dial up, you have to get a satellite dish for your set up, which can be quite pricey.

I dont have fixed connection either - I live too far from nearest town for that - because of that we built our own 5Ghz wifi network (instead of only whining that we cant do anything about internet availability) - initial expenses werent cheap, but in long term it was good decision.

the fact is that it can still cost up to $120 a month over here in some rural aras to get internet with a competitive data transfer, and even iof it were cheaper or everyone had the technical know how to set something up, thats hardly the point they were trying to make.

You consider it whining, but the bottom line is that if you are physically picking up a copy of a game, you shouldnt have to DL anything- that negates the entire purpose of buying a physical copy now doesn't it?

That's one thing people don't seem to understand about Steamworks, if you buy a Steamworks game on a retail DVD you don't need to download anything, you only need to activate the CD-Key on Steam, which you can do on even a dial-up. After that, you can install everything from the disc, without having to download gigabytes of data. Then you can even play the single-player in offline mode. It's only a problem if you have literally no internet whatsoever, but I hardly doubt anyone who games on PC is completely without internet in 2011.

this is curious, Always the same answer to justify the existence of steam. the problem is not online or offline, the problem is if you do not want this software on your PC.comfortable or uncomfortable. we have the right to buy a game without there being required steam. New Vegas, Brink, Skyrim,, Rage is not a valve games.

Exe files - I guess thats possible, but they are so small I've never even noticed them downloading, day 1 patches have nothing to do with Steam, a developer can release a day 1 patch if the game doesn't use Steam just as easily.




In an ideal world all games would have all the features of Steamworks, lack any sort of DRM and would be cheap, but we might as well be wishing for world peace and free beers for everyone. I just don't think Steam is a big inconvenience at all, it has many positive features (cloud saves, achievements, stats, anti-cheat, autopatching etc), and two minor negative ones (having to install a fairly small program that doesn't take long, and you cant sell your game - but the PC used game market is nonexistant anyway, especially for games that have multi, because your cd-key is already used whether its steam or not).

To me, opposition to Steam seems to be based on purely ideological grounds, not on any practical reason.
