Will playing FO3 with various mods ruin the vanilla experien

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:16 pm

I've been playing FO3 on the PS3 console, which means aside from the DLCs it's been a strictly vanilla experience for me and with one final trophy to complete (the Bog Walker from PL), I'm seriously considering getting a PC upgrade and the GOTY of FO3 so I can indulge in some of the mods that are out there, including the "Weapon Mod Kits" mod that the Bethesda devs decided to take a cue from and added it as an official feature in FONV. I've been looking at other mods such as the Mini Hideout, the Feng Shui mod where you can "redecorate" in-game, the Enclave Commander and the Vertibird Mod to name a few.

Maybe "ruin" is too strong of a word, but it is my fear is that I'll get so caught up trying all the cool FO3 mods that it will diminish my FONV experience, especially since I will probably be seeking mods that make FO3 a bit more similar in gameplay to FONV like the ones that simulate hunger and thirst, etc. Any opinions from players who frequently use FO3 mods?

Well, unless you get one of those ridiculous digital camoy/our world mods, I'd say it would, but I'd say for the most part, it wouldnt.

There are a few major catagories of mods, so it all depends on what you have been playing. Quest or House or Item Mods just add some extra content and do not change the game, Graphics mods change textures, then there are mods that change gameplay. I would think only the latter two would have such an impact on FO3 that you would notice the lack of them in NV. Whether what you notice is good or bad in it's absence I guess depends on how much you like the Game Changing Mods or the Re-Textures.

I don't really understand how making one game better can detract from a different game, so no, I wouldn't think modding FO3 would detract from NV at all. If it does, you still win, because you're playing a better game anyway.

New Vegas basically has all the essential mods from F3 already in the game, and the others will be modded in New Vegas shortly. NV is F3 cranked up to 11.

I quit playing FO-3 because I got a mod, and then a mod that fixes the first mod, then a mod that fixed this. Then one that fixed that.

The next thing I knew I was spending more time looking for mods and D/Ling and installing them than I was playing the game.

Once, the last time I played FO-3 I limited my self to a few core overhaul mods like FWE and MMM and some minor tweeks and body mods.

I ended up playing about 120-140 hours that way, then the 150+ I spent on vanilla. In a way its worth it, if you know what mods you want, but to know what you want and like you have to try a lot of mods, and tweak things.

The right mods that are done right and balanced are good (but not everyone is like me) can really make it a brand new game that you want to play over again. But the thing is there is so much content with a game like FO-3 that still to this day there is vanilla game and DLC I have never even got around to playing, like PL and MZ as well as B.S. I know there are places I have never even been to in vanilla FO-3 not even counting DLC!

Just Like I can safely say I have over 250 hours on Oblivion but have not seen or done all when it comes to it.

Personally, I was following FO-3 news like a love sick puppy, and was disappointed, but I am limiting my self when it comes to FO-NV and hope to be more pleased

That said, the hideouts will not affect you, unless you get used to having one and miss them in NV.

I beta tested for Feng Shu very, very slightly and it works good.

I have never used E.C or the V-B.

My suggestion, get FWE 5.0-M.M.M and W.M.K and leave it at that.

Yes, it will diminish your experience, until comparable mods are available for FNV.
And no, the Bethesda devs did not decide to take a cue from anyone: weapon mod kits were available in FO1 and FO2.

I think it depends on the type of mods you use. Ones im using is the lights that light up the street lights, the one that gives me a underground bunker with one of the tranquility lane style houses atop, and yet another that gave a uner ground personal vault up in mine field. It didnt hurt the game too much aside from the fact that the game just ended even though I have all the DLC`s loaded and activated so I need to figure out why the game ended after I activated the purifer.

Well...look at this way - not only would doing this enable you to play FO3 mods but you'll also have a now have PC capable of handling the PC version of FO:NV - which will also eventually have some great mods :D

Go for it I'd say

If you get hooked on a particular feature [added from a mod], it might be a minor annoyance (or a major one ), but anyone whose made a really cool mod will likely try to make it again for NV when the tools are matured (if they feel its still necessary that is).

I mod Fallout 3 to the point it forgets how to run right. You name it. Player race, entire bloody weapons loadout, apparel, textures, models, everything. I even have a jet pack!

Won't affect the vanilla experience of NV. And then I'll mod the piss out of that one too. I'll do as I did with Fallout 3. One or two vanilla playthroughs, then I'll mod it until it forgets how to start. And then mod it some more.

Nope. Won't do it. Not for me, anyways.

Thanks for everyone's input. I forgot about some of the more popular "game overhaul" mods like MMM and FWE, I'll have to add that to the list of mods to try if and when I have a PC gaming rig up an running.

Even though it's probably not a huge deal, I've decided to wait until I finish FONV in vanilla before I mess with any mods, probably because once I have a mod like Feng Shui and once I learn to use the GECK more, I may wind up spending more time trying to mod in stuff I want to see in the game than actually playing it. The last time I had a PC I remember spending so much time modding Warcraft 3 maps that I barely played the game. =p

Well that and I'm trying to offset the cost of building a gaming rig for as long as possible and the easiest way to do that is to stick to console for gaming. =p

Right now I am not really using any mods that add features that will not be present in New Vegas, and I have a lot. In fact, the mods I have make the gameplay as close to New Vegas as I can. It just depends on what you get. I recommend just getting some major overhauls (mine are MMM, FWE, and 20th Century Weapons) along with various roleplay tweaks.
