LOD Texture Generation question

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:57 pm

I'm trying to LOD a new worldspace using the resources and instructions found here: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36693

After following the instructions, the meshing and object textures worked just fine, but the landscape textures are completely borked. The instructions included are for FO3; is there a difference between FNV's texture generation and FO3's that I should know about? Or is this yet another function that's broken in the GECK?

My first question is did you place the textures in the proper file path? They need to be In TGA format and, live in steamApps\common\Source\Textures TGA, file path, not inside of the textures folder inside of your standard data folder.

I've built this pack by request from my experiences with FO3 and, haven't tested it myself in FNV. I am told it does work though.

Post Screen shots of your error messages and, I'll try to figure out what is going wrong or, if you want to send me the files your working on I will try to run the LOD myself. (This would be helpful in perfecting the pack because I still don't have a worldspace to test it with.)

Screens would be very helpful, I'll do what I can to help.

The textures are right where they needed to be, in the file path you have listed.

There aren't any error messages- they just show up as really screwed up in the game, flickering between white, blue and a stretched out version of the proper texture, all of which changes depending on what angle I'm facing them:

There's also a couple of spots where the LOD mesh seems to be poking through the landscape:

Are those placed mountains or landscape edited in the hight map? If they are placed it looks like I'm missing a texture in the pack up or, my textures are somehow broken. The strange thing is If the texture was missing you should have gotten an error.

If it is a placed Mountain or Rock of some sort could you give me it's editor ID so I can look for the problem.

It's all edited landscape, done through the "landscape editing" window. (The heightmap editor just crashes if I try to use it. )

I've had no problems with the few buildings I've put in; they show up just fine, even when the ground around them won't.

I'll pm you a link to the mod, maybe there's just some setting I missed.

Sounds good, It is also possible there are some missing textures I forgot to mention the dev's didn't alway use a proper Naming convention in the DLC's, (making it hard to find all of the necessary files) I'm sure this made it over into FNV.

I'll run LOD and, get back to you once I finish.

Much appreciated.

If you want it, there's a tutorial for making worldspaces here:
http://www.theengineeringguild.co.uk/fallout-3-creating-worldspaces-the-easy-way

It's the one I used to build that one. You can rattle off as many as you like for testing.

I think we may have yet another "New", New Vagus GECK Bug!!!!!!!!!! :brokencomputer:

Every attempt to generate the LOD for your worldspace has failed.

For testing purposes, I even created TGA textures for all landscape textures, regardless if they ended with _lod or not. After that failed, I removed all necessary meshes, textures and, ran through LOD again. I didn't run into any errors until I got to the "Generate objects" section.

I'm going to do a little more poking around to see if I can find out if there is some new changes to the LOD generation process for FNV.

sorry I don't have better news but, it doesn't seem to be something you did wrong, if thats any consolation.

*Sings* "It's the end of the world as we know it!" Well... If i saw that crap happening in real life I would think so.

My only suggestion.... well damn it cev you said everything. But trying everything FROM NV and not F3 might help, I know cev said it still worked, but if your having issues might as well try, or, You ran in to an issue that GECK doesn't know how to deal with F3 GECK > NV GECK, we really need updates X_X

All I can say is I'm over here doing the :run: "HAPPY DANCE!!!!" :dmc: I've figured out this issue.

Screens,

Being, Extremely "anol Retentive" and, "Obsessive Compulsive" I just couldn't let this one go! I wanted to know why this was happening for myself and, for my mod!!!!

It seems we both made some mistakes, Yours was you didn't set up your "worldspace" completely. Mine was I forgot to tell you about a step in the LOD Generation process, (at least I think I forgot to mention this in my poorly written tutorial,(Sorry, I'm not a very good writer but, I do try.)) :banghead: This is a learning process for all of us, we all make mistakes.

To fix your issue, first remove all files created during the LOD Generation process. Data\LODsettings, Data\Meshes\landscape\LOD and the Data\textures\landscape\lLOD files. Next open up your mod and go to World\Worldspaces select your "New Worldspace," (Volcano). Set the image space to "NV Default Exterior" and, the climate to "NV Default Climate". (I'm not sure if setting the climate is necessary but, I did this while diagnosing your issue and, it didn't hurt.)

After that, re-run the LOD generation.

"Now were on to my mistake!!! :brokencomputer:"

Once LOD Generation has finished, go to your Source\Textures TGA\landscape\LOD\ "Your worldspace" (Volcano), delete the (empty) "Diffuse" folder and, rename the "DiffuseGenerated" folder to simply "Diffuse". Move the entire LOD folder back to your Data\textures\Landscape folder. I think I forgot, to add the "Diffuse" folder issue in my little tutorial. :brokencomputer:

Launch the game and, go check out your fully textured, LOD Generated worldspace.

By the way, you owe me a day of my life or, at least a cookie! "I like oatmeal raisin" :D '

I'm really more glad to know that my LOD pack and the LOD Generation process still works as it should.

Awesome. You deserve that cookie. :cookie: And I'll make sure Elanthil01 adds your name to the credits for the mod.

The downside is now I have no excuse not to build an even larger worldspace (sigh), but I can live with that. :frog:
