[WIPz] Buck's Place

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:54 pm

"Texas Buck" Brunson made his fortune in the Ranching business raising Bighorners, Brahmin and in his day sometimes a lot of hell! He always felt it odd that he had picked up the name "Texas" as he was not from there and had never even been there. But he reckoned the nickname was OK so he let it stick. To his friends, he was simply Buck. Yes, that's right, as in the "Buck's Steak House" Buck. You may have seen the signs all around?

But one thing about Buck that only a select few in his "inner circle" knew was that not only was he a businessman, rancher, retired adventurer, artifact collector and dealer, but he was also a High Stakes Gambler. Or as he would put it he was a Poker player. Poker, he would say, is a "game of skill" so in his mind it was not gambling. It was simply another way to use his money as a tool to make more. He had won (and lost) fortunes in a single night of play many times. Hell, he has won and lost it in a single hand before.

But with the Families in New Reno and now Mr. House in New Vegas shutting down private games, high stakes poker players have had to go underground or put up with the enormous rake the casinos pull from each pot. Hell, in their crappy games it's hard just to beat the rake much less make any money. Moreover, the casinos don't spread anything remotely close to the stakes these guys play for so there isin't even a decent game in either town...unless you know where to look!

Unfortunately, Buck has gone missing and it's up to you to find him. I plan on stringing together a sort of crumb trail for the player to follow in the game until the mystery is discovered. Once the quest gets started (since you are helping his granddaughter) you will have access to Buck's Place - a VERY nice player home. (That part was easy as I just ported over my "Chekov's Place" mod from Fallout 3.)

In addition, I plan on setting up an actual Buck's Steak House either in Freeside or North Vegas, and maybe even a Scmitty's or Cherry's to compliment it. I also will be hopefully adding in a small private casino with of course a "simulated" poker room. I say simulated because it will be for looks only as unfortunately, poker was left out of the game.

I'm still working on the overall story for the crumb trail by scouting out locations and stuff now. Any ideas or feedback for the story would awesome if you think of plot twists and such. My scripting & quest making skills are very basic so it will mostly be done with simple notes, keys and so forth.

So chime on in with any suggestions you might have!

Hmm, I was fiddling with a bar at Buck's in Freeside called "Buck's Bar" (creative, I know). Not sure if anything will ever come of that though, so it doesn't really matter.

Sounds like a fun mod.

Yeah, I've thought a little about putting the Steak House in Freeside, but I haven't decided 100% where it's going. I have a nice little spot I'm looking at in the Northeast part of Vegas that's very easy to get to and doesn't have a million Fiends spawning all over the place, lol. Also, it has 3 different buildings that are all connected so it's definitely doable for a Restaurant / Bar / Casino combo under one roof. This area also has an excellent outdoor area that I think will make a very nice patio for outdoor dining.

Plus, it's just a pain having to go through 2 or 3 different loading screens just to get to the interior of Freeside. So I'm leaning towards this spot. But, I think I'll have the quest triggered by someone in Freeside, possibly in the Wrangler.

Another option I've been tossing around is to actually have 2 Steak Houses. One in Freeside (where you can trigger the quest) and the other at the N. Vegas spot I mentioned. The N. Vegas spot is also where the home is located, so it will still be the main location. Since there are literally dozens of Buck's Steak House signs strewn around everywhere, it's not beyond possibility that there could be more than one up and running I suppose.

Thanks for commenting!

Well, you could always just add a map marker right outside the place. I did a small mod for personal use that adds tons of convenient map markers outside the wrangler, the McCarran supply shack and other locations that are just a pain to get to.

Alrighty then, I've been working on this, and aside from some last minute cluttering I have the layout of the Restaurant almost finished. Thought I'd post up some pics and see what y'all think so far.
