Graphics stuttering fix for nvidia GPUs!

*Updated to new links*

Hi all...

Well I found a fix for everyone that is having problems with the horrendous stuttering problem on Nvidia drivers. I remember doing this for Fallout 3 a few months ago. So after a few days of playing Fallout NV and not getting any results at the stuttering problem I figured I would look up what I did before turns out it actually friggin works . What everyone needs to do is revert to Nvidia drivers 180.48 I know its a major pain in the ass and we shouldnt have to do it. You will be able to tell instantly when you load your game up that the problem is fixed. It also seems that it fixes it better than it did for fallout 3. I havent tried this for the 32 bit drivers so If someone would try and and post back I would appreciate it. Please if this works for you reply to this thread and spread the word on this because playing this game without the stuttering is amazing.

This should help the stuttering for these GPU's

GeForce 200 series:
GTX 260, GTX 280

GeForce 9 series:
9800 GT, 9600 GSO, 9600 GS, 9500 GS, 9800 GTX/GTX+, 9300, 9200, 9300 GS, 9300 GE, 9600 GT, 9500 GT, 9800 GX2, 9400

GeForce 8 series:
8800 Ultra, 8800 GTS, 8800 GT, 8800 GTS 512, 8800 GTX, 8800 GS

GTX 260 and it may not be working as well as I thought. the stuttering goes away but it seems to freeze eventually.

... revert back to older drivers ...

I asked Bethesda, since they said the bug was uncovered with a updated video driver, which update it was so we could go back to the previous one. Never heard a peep. Guess now they will be adding your advice to their tech board and taking credit :(

Thanks for doing the leg work for us though, I can't test right now (at work) but as they specifically id'd the problem as compatibility with up-to-date drivers (go figure...) it should work perfectly.

Ok I have two GTX260s in SLI

The game seems to freeze up if you DONT have vertical sync on. Crashes pretty quick. Right now Im running Single display performance mode with Alternate frame rendering 2. Seems to be running very well.

*Edit*
Im even alt tabbing and its not crashing.

I guess you would have to figure out what driver for the optimus was released at the same time as the 180.48 for the GTX200 series and try them. You would think that whatever was updated that makes the game stutter was updated in all of their drivers across the board.

Sorry I cant help more.

The driver won't work with the 4xx series since the 4xx series didn't exist at the time the driver came out.

UPDATE :::::

I'll take a look at this. We just fixed the Fallout3 stutter which was caused by mass amounts of block destroys. It might be related to this issue as well.

Has this helped anyone so far? I see it getting a lot of hits but no one is adding any input. Also where did you get that quote from?

Are those links going anywhere? Getting a blank page for some reason. Searching for old drivers myself I find drivers only up to versio 186 with GeForce 9800GT.

They changed the link to the drivers for some reason over night. I updated the links to the new pages.

Also. I'm running Windows 7, and these appear to be for Vista only. Is that a problem?

I just downloaded a d3d9.dll file in Nexus 1 hour ago.The guy explained that that was a stutter remover definitive.I tested, worked perfect for me (never less than 45 fps with an old Nvidia 8800GTX in exteriors and interiors, near water areas,or lots of npcs) but when I returned again, the post was disabled/deleted.

Maybe they want to hide the solution and be released as a patch or something.Read this fast, before it vanishes too. XD

Shouldn't be a problem Im running 64 bit windows 7 myself. I did the d3d9.dll fix and it didn't work for me. im glad it worked for some people.

There's a lot of confusion with the terminology, I think. The DLL fix wasn't intended to solve "stuttering," it was for a performance issue many users (myself included) were getting with NPC face rendering, where modern cards would bog down to 10-20 FPS when multiple NPCs were on screen, especially when faces started moving. For this, it works (and I believe there are now NV and ATI versions of the fix available). You'll know you've gotten the DLL in the right place because the launcher will redo the graphics detection check and pick medium (though of course you can then reset it to ultra high if you like).

I assume by "stuttering" you're referring to either:
1) The classic Oblivion/Fallout3 micro-stutter than occurs when the engine drops a frame (at least that's what it feels like it's doing). Someone called this the "64 htz issue" but I'm not sure if that's actually valid. As far as I know there's no solution for this aside from clamping your FPS, but that can cause slowdowns (as in, actual game timing slowdowns) if the engine ever goes below your set FPS. Very interesting to hear the nVidia claims to have found a driver solution, if this is really what they're talking about, because this has been a really annoying element of this engine since Oblivion (and Bethesda recently said they intend to continue using an "upgraded" version of this engine for at least their next major RPG).

2) FalloutNV had some small pauses for me which occured when you turned the camera quickly. It basically felt like there was loading happening when you turned around, not just as you moved. After applying the DLL fix *and* turning Water Multisampling to Low this issue is gone (at least on my system, and I've heard others report similar results). There seems to be an issue with water rendering, and water is actually more common in the environment than you might think (all of those swampy holes you'll find scattered around).

Just piping in to say that this didn't work very smoothly for me thanks to having Windows 7 rather than Windows Vista. Hope it helps someone else though!

Download 260.89 (but not 260.93) and do this:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1128198-fix-for-the-white-flashing-and-black-spots

Forces NV to use FO3's game profile which has stuttering fixed in 260.89

Failed for me too... I have a Geforce GTS 250 and the drivers tell me the hardware is not compatible with the drivers. The drop in file (d3d9) Didn't help either.
