Vulgar language

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:07 am

One of the things that made fallout feel like such a real place was how people didn't hold back on swearing, including the Lone wanderer himself. So I'm really hoping to hear a lot of F-bombs and other bad language said by people you are directly talking to, and by raiders yelling at you in combat in New Vegas. Do you agree?

Ehhhhh. I don't a 'I WANT HIS HEAD ON A [censored] PLATE' once in a while. But if all I see is 'The [censored] you doing you [censored] moron watch where the [censored] you're going you [censored]' I'd be annoyed. I can't stand massive quantities of cursing in a small space of time.

I think that will be a given in Mojave Wasteland friend. :tops:

EDIT: Not a constant flow of curses, but you know what I mean.

I agree that FO3 had it about right, yes. If you're saying 1 word in every 4 should be a profanity, then no. There's "gritty," then there's "excessive and gratuitous."

Oh, there will be F bombs.

Apparently people will comment on your tryst with Fisto with colorful words according to the ESRB description.

I don't mind swearing in a game, especially a gritty game. Like others have said, it doesn't need to be completely excessive.

I don't want it excessive, unless it's a character that can pull it off like Desmond.

Nope. I expect all the raiders in the game to be British gentlemen spotting monocles and top hats. Instead of "F#%$ YOU!" they say "Why I say! How terribly rude of you, good sir!".

Nah, I expect there to be a good deal of swearing, but not excessively. If it's raiders or mercs or powder gangers, I expect a lot. If I meet Mr. House and his first words are "Who let this %&#$ in?!" I'll just be like "W...T...F...Mate?".

I disagree, but only on a technicality basis. The man was a standup philosopher. And one of the greatest, if not the greatest, ever to walk the planet. :tops:

Use the Profane formula that was applied to Desmond, and I will be happy.

Desmond was amazing, and he just exuded awesome. I would love to see him return with a larger role sometime during the franchise. Not in Vegas, but eventually.

I really wanted to get to know Desmond alot more than we did, so I really hope Bethesda brings him back at some point (especially if it could be as a companion) if Obsidian doesn't have any interest.

I agree Desmond was the most kick-ass Ghoul around, He definitely had a very "expansive" vocabulary. :tops:

"Up north to pursue other rivals" it would be disappointing if that wasn't hinting at him appearing in the next Bethesda developed Fallout game.

"Swearing" is just words like any others and as such they have to fit the dialogue, monologue or multilouge or else they seem out of place and become an eyesore

except Desmond and the Mayor. Just a few foul mouthed characters, and of course plenty of cursing options for the courier (optional)

George Carlin: Its always entertaining to hear a angry old man rants about bull***t about people screwing other people.

I can understand being realistic. Most of us let some cuss words fly every now and then. And in Fallout I expect it. Nothing wrong there.

However, I do have a problem with juvenile attempts at being extreme or edgy. I'm completely against censorship in all it's forms but let's not turn into grade school children here.

Since this is Fallout and it's still rated M, I'm sure we can expect to hear our share of strong language, and I'm quite fine with that. After all, this is a wasteland, I'm sure we'll meet lots of people who aren't known for their good manners. Though I actually hope they don't overdo it. If you throw a certain word that starts with an f into every sentence in the game, it actually just serves to cheapen the effect of the word, plus it makes it seem like the game is trying too hard to be "dark" and "edgy" while it actually comes off as being childish. If a game does have swearing, I want it to be used where it counts, characters shouldn't do it in every sentence unless that's just the way that character is.

Of course, in the end, having good writing helps a lot too, if the dialog isn't good to begin with, making the characters use rude words won't change that.

If I don't hear a few F-bombs I will be disappoint. And hey, who'd love a reference to Carlin's 7 deadly words thrown in the wasteland somewhere? Like perhaps a box of Nabisco [censored] on a shelf in a comedy club?

If I may remind you gentlemen of the forum rules...
2. Cursing/Swearing is not allowed.

We do not allow any bad language on these forums. Swearing, even with asterisks, intentionally misspelling, omitting letters, other characters replacing letters or any other form of avoidance is not permitted. Doing so will result in a warning for bypassing the autocensor. In addition, if your post contains close to nothing but [censored] tags, it too can be considered excessive swearing and be cause for a warning.

There's been a little too much censor avoidance here, so this is being closed.
