Its a true open world where your free to do whatever you want.

But what he is saying is that If I'm Caesars Legion and I have a bad rep with NCR. I shouldn't be able to go in their area all willy nilly.. That breaks C&C.

Morrowind was a bit better about that. You could only join one of the Houses, and one of the religions, for example. I think you could still join the Fighters and Mages, though. (Were the Thieves mutually-exclusive with anyone?)

You could actually join both religons. One was denied to you at a certain point in the MQ, but before or after that you could join. The Fighters Guild had issues with the Thieves, but if you did a certain quest in a certain way, you could join both of those factions.

Daggerfall, now that was a game where Factions mattered. If you were in the right, or would that be wrong faction, and walked into a place that was part of a different faction, you would be attacked. In that game, Faction choices were limited by the factions you were in or wanted to join.

Hello,

I had Fallout 3 GOTY on my PS3 and had over 150 Hrs on my main and almost 100% completion (quests). However, my file grew to about 15MB and the lag and crashes grew so bad it was almost unplayable. Everytime I used VATS my game would lag and freeze.

I was just wondering if Obsidian would make the file smaller or make the game less laggy.

Thoughts?

well broken steel made the game lagg.... so it could be that

This.

At Adams Air Force Base, my game crashed like TEN times. The DLC are very unstable, at least on my PS3.

To keep your file size as low as possible on the PS3, consider trying to NOT open or open as few lockers/cases/cabinets/storage bins as possible, and if you do open them, take everything in them and sell what you don't want.

I've tried it on my 2nd character where the ones I've opened, I've cleaned out the whole locker, taking all the crap too, and then selling it. It's kept my file size a bit smaller than my other character, who left junk in lockers and only took the useful stuff.

On my third playthrough, I'm going to try not even opening any lockers but for ammunition bins and see if that'll reduce the size of the file from about 9312 or so, with everything completed but the final mission in pre-DLC Fallout 3 on PS3...

Bottomline, it's ridiculous we have to even make sacrifices to keep the file size from getting "too big" for the game to handle without freezing, if that's the case as many have said.

I rarely have crashes at level 20 with my 2nd character, no more than my 360 version of Fallout 3 had. And it's a myth that the 360 has "less bugs/glitches than the PS3". Other than the save issue, the PS3 actually plays really well, with few bugs and few crashes, but that's already in another thread.....

Choices and Consequences

It means that every choice you make should have a real consequence or effect on the game.

Many choices don't really have consequences in a lot of games - for instance, if you have a choice of two paths to take, and each path has equal challenges and leads to the same destination, choosing which path to take was a 'fake' choice. It looked like it made a difference, but no matter which path you decided on, the outcome is the same.

If, on the other hand, you have the choice of two paths to take, and each leads to a different destination, that would give a real consequence to your choice, especially if by taking one path you could never go back and take the other path.

In New Vegas, this would translate to a choice of which faction to side with. It shouldn't be an easy choice. A good indicator of a fake choice or false choice or one lacking consequences is that they will almost always be 'easy' or 'quick' choices. If you choose one side, say the NCR, and take missions from them blowing up Legion assets, you shouldn't be able to waltz in a Legion camp and get missions from them.

If you are familiar with FO3, the Tenpenny Tower quest is probably the best example of choice and consequences played out. You must think carefully about who to side with, and your actions can have long reaching effects, some of them not immediately apparent until much later.

Going back to the Oblivion examples, where the different guilds were concerned, there was no C&C. Joining a guild was an easy choice, because that choice didn't lock you out of anything else or have negative effects to balance out the positive effects. If the opportunity presented itself to join a guild, there was no true choice present, because the only smart thing to do was join the guild. Any choice with an optimal option for all playthroughs is NOT a real choice. The game may as well make it for you, because the choice bears no consequence.

I hope I helped you understand it more. I like Oblivion, but the more C&C a game has the better it is. Also the more C&C the more fun replays are. Hopefully New Vegas will have C&C in spades.

If we have to not take stuff from lockers not go to certain areas then wtf is the point thats the whole point of the game is to explore EVERYTHING and pick up tons of stuff that problem is games these days are too much like computer games even on consoles file size ram memory cache you did not have to deal with this crud 10 years ago its just too much like a computer now and days and no im not a old gamer not even close.

While I agree it'd be nice to not have to deal with that, they *are* computer games. Old consoles played games, that is it. More to go wrong is simply the cost of additional complexity.

While I agree it'd be nice to not have to deal with that, they *are* computer games. Old consoles played games, that is it. More to go wrong is simply the cost of additional complexity.

Consoles are just dedicated computers. They are basically cheap PCs meant to be plug and play without any hassle, and they do that job fairly well. As time goes on in a console's life cycle, developers push the limits more and more, trying to exploit all the performance they can out of it for their games. Player's demand more and more from their games and it's usually a challenge for ALL developers to produce their desired vision and get it to run at 30 frames a second. Players are now getting games on consoles that years ago would have been confined solely to PC.

Consoles are static hardware. They never improve, yet game and graphics technology does. Developers struggle to make use of all the latest improvements they have access to on PCs and translate that to consoles that are years old. Sometimes this works flawlessly and sometimes it doesn't. I'm sure Bethesda was aware of issues starting to appear with the size of the save file causing problems, but if that only occurred 150 hours into the game (more than enough time to beat the game and explore most of the areas), they were left with a decision - Keep the game as is, with over a hundred hours of amazing gameplay intact, or give console players a chopped down, more linear version of the game that PC gamers were getting. The answer is pretty clear.

Developers try and make the best version of their game they can on every platform it is released on. Bethesda is one of the few developers to try and bring an unfiltered PC game experience to consoles, many companies don't bother - they make a game as graphics intensive and huge as they want and just release it on the PC. There is no magic bullet for the problem we've been discussing.
