Am I the only one? --> permanently remove ALL map marker

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 11:07 pm

I searched the forums and no luck. I'm looking for what is surely a simple mod:

Remove ALL map markers, permanently

What I mean is towns, shrines, anything...I just want a blank map that I can use to navigate. I used TMM in console, but its not so helpful, because the places come back when I re-discover them.

Could someone please help me?
Thanks!

I'm sure you can use the CK and find and remove all the markers manually.

Yes, Skyrim compass tuner can do that. May I ask why you want no markers at all?

Having the physical map in-hand, without seeing landmarks pop up at you in the map menu would really increase immersion.

For immersion, I use the map as my journal. It's exactly like I had a paper map and I wrote on it my destinations and what I have to do once there. I open the journal only to decide which quest I'll activate and which one(s) my character won't do.

Oh thanks guys, that was easier than I thought. Last time i checked the compass tuner, it was, well... a compass tuner ^^ --> glad it now does maps too!

You asked why? The reason is indeed immersion. I use a paper map where I make my own notes about discovered locations. I also use a handwritten journal with all the game info I need. Just seems more fun and I suppose old school to me. I also use the following, in case you're interested:
- Obviously quest markers off and modded better quest objectives on
- Compass entirely off...navigate by geography, immersive HUD
- No fast travel except carriages
- Master difficulty sine lvl 1 with just about every difficulty mod you can imagine (deadly combat, duel combat, DD, hardcoe + rebalanced, PISE)
- Very gymped ench and smith other than tents or wine skins and survival things
- Heavy environment immersion (dark URWL with Mike Fox dark dungeons, heavy rain + snow, EDWS, Frostfall, Imps)
- Just about every decent enemy pack you can imagine (wars, skyrim live, occupy skyrim, moar, etc etc)
- And many many more mods, all running beautifully together

I play a sneak thief, dual wield + arrows + illusion. My goal is to tweak the game so that I can use every possible means to surive. I hate self imposed rules or restrictions, therefore I also want the map locations gone.

Being a long time RPG player, I can tell you that these mods turn Skyrim into an incredible journey of survival and challenge. If anyone is interested in my mod list, please let me know and I'll post.

Thanks for your help!

Sham, I agree and have a near-identical setup. I don't even open the map or the quest pages - they're like playing with a walk-through.

To me, role playing is all about what you'd actually have in the game world. Maps and quest locations are just cheating.

EDIT: And yes, I'd love to see your mod list. Thanks!

Cool. Nice to hear I'm not the only crazy one. The key principle is ...to each his own. I recently pvssyd with a guy who was playing vanially Skyrim. He complained how hard it is and that he wishes for more guidance and lower difficulty levels. For him its perfectly normal to go exactly in the oppostie direction that I go with the game. The ability to do so is what makes TES great.

I actually use the quest pages...they don't bother me. But again, to each his own :)

So, now I maybe promised more than I can deliver. Is there a reasonable way to show you my 173 plugins/mods (oops, not counting steam only ones)? I don't want to type them all in lol. Any ideas how to export a mod list? Maybe I need to do some screenshots.

You could do it yourself really quick and dirty by loading up the CK, loading Skyrim.esm, typing Map Marker into the object window, and deleting it. It's not the best way, but it would get the job done. If you have the time, you could also just delete every one from the world. That would be far more clean, but also time consuming.

I completely disabled the HUD but I use the in-game map instead of a hand-written one, as I described earlier. I don't need mods that make Skyrim more difficult to play; it's not a survivor game. ;)

Using a program like NMM, I believe there's an option that allows you to export your list. BOSS and Wrye Bash probably also have a similar feature. Just be sure to put a spoiler tag on it once you post it. I'm also interested in what you're using.

OK, I exported the list of plugins from BOSS. Hope you can recognize all the mods, if not, let me know and I'll clarify. I am guessing that there are some conflicting mods in this list, but they seem to not cause any game problems. If you find anything clearly not compatible or reduandant, let me know. I invested a lot of hours in this list and am always looking to improve!

I have no idea how to use a spoilertag! So I changed font color to black. Just highlight the below to be able to read it.

Also, tools I use are
NMM
BOSS - I use standard boss order, except that I move darklights template (MIke's) after URWL or it won't work
Wrye Bash - for leveled lists only
Extra Hotekeys
Script Dragon
SKSE
Skyrim Compass Tuner :-)
Skyrimspeeds

Spoiler
this should be a spoiler.
The third from the left in the editor (above where I'm typing this!), top row, is BBcode for me. That gives options including spoiler. I've not used it, so I'm not sure, but that should work.
The point of the tag is not to hide it in this instance, but to stop your post being really long... which it is at the moment
Also some people use white backgrounds, so this would show up for them (same reason why people should use automatic font colour, not white.)

Edit: excellent! it worked.

You have complete lists of your mods and plugings in C:\Users\Username\AppData\local\Skyrim. AppDate is a hidden folder; you just have to make it visible in the Windows settings.

May I ask why you want no markers at all?
For me, it's that the markers are so cartoonishly large. The more they crowd the map the smaller Skyrim seems to be. The distance between cities appears less because the markers associated with those cities take up so much space. Besides which, they are (in my opinion) as aesthetically attractive as highway billboards and, like billboards, ruin the beauty of the landscape they cover up.

I've often thought about resizing the markers so that they're much smaller. They were obviously meant to be easily recognizable from across a living room when seen on a TV. But when viewed 12" away on a monitor they are way, way, way too large, in my opinion. I may do that resizing mod some day. But in the meantime I will try the mod that crash_oxide linked to.
