1080i Does it exist on PS3 version?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 8:55 am

I've been running around the internet trying to figure out the answer to this question, as I see many people having issues with it. Does 1080i exist for PS3 in Skyrim? The back of the box states it does. I have a 1080p television, the game runs at 720p, but my tv is 2 years old and some smart guy thought it would be a funny joke to put upscaling to 1080p on whatever is on the screen and really destroys picture quality of the 720p, as the TV is just guessing at what the colors are supposed to be that aren't displayed. So, I'm trying to run it in 1080i, I disabled 1080p and 720p on my PS3, and left 1080i enabled and 480p, as you can not disable 480p. Now when I boot the game, it displays in 480p and not 1080i. It's a Sony Bravia HDTV and I am using an HDMI cable. So, if anyone can answer this question, and possibly show pictures of proof you have it running would be a nice addition (don't just send pictures of the game and say its 1080i, please show your TV's display options to show that the TV is recieving a 1080i signal and outputting the same).

No it says 1080i as well on the back. At least on the North American batch.

Yeah it does say that but it usially looks worse when available because the games are not running native 1080 and therefore upscaled

The game is compatible with 1080i, if your TV will run no resolution but 1080i (there was a guy with this a week or so ago) then it will try running with 1080i, however if it does this.. you will lose half the interface.

Long story short, the ps3 settings will force it into any resolution you like, beth have added that annoying bit of code that trys to force it to 720 regardless of your tv's resolution, like most ps3 games.
So if your TV is capable of playing up to 1080p, and you dont restrict the ps3, it will always play in 720p. If your tv isnt capable of 720p, it will play in 480 (or 580 as is my PS3's lowest).

Whats on the back of the box is what the game is compatible with, not what it will run at. It will run at 1080i if thats the only thing your tv supports, but if it supports the more prefered (and game default) 720p, then thats what it will run at.

You can't trust what gamebox says about resolutions. Example Dice has confirmed before BF3 was released that BF3 is only 704 resolution at PS3 but PS3 gamebox still says that it's 720p. I think it's wrong advertising. It should say correct deteils about product what I think. I don't know about Skyrim though.

1080i definitely not supported on my version. Tried to force 1080i by disabling 720p and/or 1080p. However, I couldn't uncheck 576i so it was always downscaled to sd instead of upscaled to 1080i. And before you ask, yes, my monitor is full hd. :P

Same issue, my TV only displays 420i, 420p, 1080i and I can't force the game to display at the 1080i. Very annoying especially since the packaging says it will support 1080i AND 1080i is the prefered resolution for the game (1080i in red on the back of the package).

I don't know if anyone actually got it to work in 1080i (Tsori seems to have), but I think it may as well be just a printing error. I've got a european version and it says nothing about 1080i on the back. Maybe the printers in the US of A confused it with the 360 version which, as far as I know, does support 1080i. If Tsori confirms that he played the PS3 version in 1080i though, it'd mean they either shipped two versions of the same game or, far more likely, a bug is at hand which could be fixed ... at least in theory. ^^

I too cannot get this game to display in 1080i on my Panasonic Tau CRT HDTV (which is only capable of 480i and 1080i output; no progressive scan). It will output a standard def image regardless if I use component or HDMI cables, which is really quite disappointing (not to mention that some of the interface seems to be chopped off). I am hoping that this is due to some sort of display auto-detection bug, though I won't be surprised if the 1080i indication on the back of the box is a misprint, since neither Fallout 3 or New Vegas support 1080i. :(

Tbh it only worked for me as i tried it on a cheap 19" from tesco which wont support anything BUT 1080i, even 480/580 that the ps3 defaults too. In this case, when setting the display settings on the ps3 automatically it unticks everything but 1080i, including the default 480.

Sorry to say however, most HD tv's will support standard definition, and therefore the ps3 wont let you uncheck it.

Overall though, as i mentioned above, and as some have found out, the screen size when in 1080i is stretched and deformed to the point where its unplayable. The screen cuts off parts of the screen so much that you cant see any of the menus, just the right hand edge of it.

1080i pushes more pixels than 720P. If you want framerates to go down (maybe only slightly) then run the game at 1080i. I too could not force it on my television, but I'm perfectly fine running the game at 720P.
